Well I figured this was going to be the case. Pulled the old NH68 in the shop and found the cause for the clunking sound from the pick up and the broken pick up chain.
Lokks like the pick up cam has a big dent in it and the roller bearings have been getting stuck in there. Also noticed that the some of the bars the pick up teeth are attached to are pretty worn out. Parts arnt a problem the pick up I took off here have pretty good parts left on it. The frame was the only thing bent on it. ANy one ever have one of these pick ups apart? Got any tricks?

Bummer. Good thing you had that parts baler. Can't say that I've had the joy of taking one of those apart.

Hey for all you guys that are bashing the 68, can you be more specific as to why this is the "worst" baler NH made?

If we were talking NH 469 haybines I might agree somewhat as I own one of those and it seems everyone I've seen has had drawbar issue's.

Man made it, it's going to break. It's just a matter of when. If it took 50 season's of use to get to this, then I'd guess that it probably exceeded the original designer's expectations. Wear on a 50 year old baler doesn't make it the worst NH made.

Kelly Bud, the 68 baler was the model that put New Holland on every small farm in America. It was one of the all time best. Yes, I have seen far too many pickup cams wear out. They are a BEAST to replace. There may be a short cut if you are interested. Steve

I hay't to tell you this but those 68's where the worst baler NH ever made. my boss bought one new, and has bough a new NH every few years, and he said it was out of all the balers the worst.
so if you are smart get a newer NH baler, will give you a lot less problems. Tim

If the 68 was the worst baler NH ever made that is a real compliement to New Holland. My Dad bought one new and we used if for more than 20 years, with very little trouble, always a reliable machine. I've had the cam plates go on NH round baler and Haybine, never wore one out on a square baler. Same sort of pain to fix I'm sure, good luck on the repair.

What you talkin about? She cleaned up real nice.
The bale chambers not rusted out. I replaced most every thing that can wear out. She makes good tight full square bales.
You guys slingin out them fightin words. Let me get this pick up fixed. I will put this old girl up aganst any $2000 baler you can find.

I for one understand the logic behind fixen something you know is servicable. Once you fix the pickup, you pretty much have a new baler again...good luck and don't let the naysayers get you down. I know you can do it!
