NH super 67 vs NH 68

I just purchased a NH model 68 baler through auction and I was wondering how much different the 68 is from a super 67.

I've visited Kelly's site, and I noticed that the 68 uses wood as a bearing surface for the plunger. Any problems with obtaining those? I'd have to guess they'll need replaced due to age. Any chance that the super 67's plunger would interchange? It's on rollers.

Any thoughts guys or are thse two balers more or less mechanically interchangeable?

Thanks.

You can't beat the NH balers that includes all of them. I wouldn't have said that 40+ years ago when I was a young whippersnapper. Loading all the time behind them when my dad farmed me out when we weren't busy including the old horsehead side tie balers with the Wisconsin engine balers, I always prayed for rain to get a break but looking back they were awesome. Never got to much of a chance to work behind very many new series balers because if they were a better version of the old ones I give up.

Here you go.
Scroll down on the left pane and find the NH68 link.

I never owned one so I can't tell you first hand, but my boss had bought one new and he said it gave him lots of trouble, and he has been farming for all of his life, he just turned 70,
has owned 37 balers, he said the 68 was junk.
don't know 'bout you all but I am going to take his word. I my self have a JD 24T, has givin me trouble for a while, the last owner got it out of time, lol
works like a charm now. but if I could find one I would get a newer NH baler, they made the best!
TIm
P.S, would ask the boss but he went to florida! lol

I would hate to knock a NH baler but I would NOT get a 68! get anything else! NH made the best balers(and still does) but those 68 are good only for scrap. sorry if I made anybody mad...

Hate to disagree with you, but we still have our NH 68 purchased new back in the 50's. Not used much anymore, but still works. Never had a lick of trouble with it, aside from normal maintenance.

NH dealer has them. About $20 each. I would give you the part number but my parts book has grown legs and run off.

Too late to turn back now, I bought one. I have the super 67, My super 67 is worn out and needs to much TLC. I've tinkered it along for 5 seasons since I purchased it learning along the way how to make good bales with a tired wore out old baler. (Note to self.. don't buy a baler in a dark barn. It's true though, anything can be fixed with $$$ if you have it to spend) I'm planning on trying to do more than the usual 400 bales this season.

Aside from the plunger bearings being made of wood in the 68 how different is the 68 from the super 67 really? I can't believe NH drastically retooled and redesigned in that time period, of course I admit I don't know what models were being made side by side at the time. I would part the 68 into the super 67, but the 68 is basically "new" having sat for 30 years before getting minimal use the past 15. I haven't baled with it yet as I need to check the timing. How bad can it be? I gave $525 for it.

Anyway, what exactly about the 68 makes it "the worst baler". Your not being specific Tim.

NH68 is a great baler. The only problem was that quite a few made bannana bales. This is where you get more hay in the right side of the bale and less in the left. Causing the bale to look like a bannana.
NH68 it is very improtant to have a nice heavy windrow. Keep her right at capacity.
Also run the baler so that the windrow is picked up as close to the plunger side of the pick up as possable.
Make sure you have good hay stops in the bale chamber. There are 4 of them. New ones cost about $4 each so get them if you need them.
Mine has never made a bannana so I guess I got lucky. Here is a shot on me baling some rained on oats hay a couple years ago. See how close to the pick up I am. Also these windrows were to light but still no bannanas.

"She sure is a 'beaut Clark".

Got my "new" 68 home today. Wood plunger bearings look good, it's not to out o time by much, but I can't believe they were baling with only two sets of feeder tines instead of the three, but I have a spare set so I'm good to go there.

After a good cleaning I found some rust through in the piece of metal that the tension springs are attached to. Bale chamber itself looks alright. I'd have to guess that it was stored for quite some time with a bale or two left in it. I'll have to post a pic of my two "gems".
