I recently purchased a JD 2955 86HP and would like opinion on the size bush hog for it. I can only locate 10' and 14 ' models locally and want to know is a 14' too much. Also I'll be cutting farm road ROW and field set asides, pros & cons on lift and pull type please.

I think a 10 -14 is a bit large for a 3 pt. I prefer 3 pt on smaller mowers due to the corners mentioned and wear and tear on the drive shaft.

On big mowers I think you are better off with a bat wing pull type with 100 hp gearboxes. Don't slack the gearboxes dickering.

Highway boys around here use as I recommended for good reason.

I pull a ten foot Bush Hog brand with a 55 HP The book with the cutter say 50hp for a pull type and 75 for a three point the same size. I prefer a pull type because it is not putting a lot of weight on the tractor and as You can pull a bigger cutter with less hp. Brother pulls a 15 with a 55-60 hp but that is clipping pasture and at times that is a little tough. I think 80 would handle a 14ft pull type. If the right of ways had much of a slope i would probably want a bigger tractor.

10' or 14' either one should be fine with 86hp.

I have a 9' 709 pull type that I pull with a 52 hp tractor, I cut some VERY heavy stuff with it last year-only bogged down in the very worst. I know a guy who pulls a 15' with 50hp-but he only cuts grass and keeps it mowed pretty regular.

I find it easier with my tractors to keep even height with pull type, also easier to get on/off, but sometimes it sure would be nice to have one on 3pt to back into corners, etc.

My only advice would be to avoid the real cheapies (king cutter, etc) if you are going to be doing anything heavy. But if you are looking at 10'-14' I am sure they are fine.
