I just bought a very nice trip plow at an auction. I'm a newbee and hope to have fun this spring. I'm not sure of the "Trip" function. I can't seem to get the plow out of plow mode and into "non-plow" mode. When I bought it, it was in non-plow mode, and of course farting around with my new toy I pulled the lever, dropping it into plow mode. I believe pulling the trip lever forward (the one with a cord attached to the tractor seat)is the answer but it doesn't seem to work. Am I doing something wrong? Is an owners manual available somewhere?

I have a Model 51 single bottom trip plow and have the original owner"s manual for it. I think maybe the manual covers the Model 52 also. I"ll check it out tonight, and if it would help, I can email you some scans of the manual that apply to the trip feature.

Let me know..my email is open.

Thanks so much, that would be very helpful. Do you still use your 51? I'm replacing a broken spring in my clutch assembly and hope to be ready to rip up some ground in afew weeks.

Thanks,

Dean

Dean,

Yeah, I still use the old girl to plow garden and I also dug a long trench with it as well....works great. Needs a resto but for now it is a nice little worker.

The 44 the other poster mentioned has an enclosed clutch that is different than the open clutch on that plow, jack up the clutch side wheel and slowly turn the wheel in direction as you pull the clutch lever foward, you will only hold the lever just a bit before letting go, you can see when it is to the corect spot, then continue rotating the wheel, if it does not come up then you will have to pull the clutch apart and clean it out as it is most likely full of old grease and dirt, on the clutch dogs you do not want any grease as it will cause them not to hold, you might find a broken spring in there but it should be obvious if it is missing as the parts would have nothing to return then to rest mode, watch when jacked up ant turning the wheel that you do not knock it off the jack as it will move the oposite wheel at the same time, if it wants to move the jack you can stop the wheel turning at any point to reposition the jack. A manual should be avaible from J D but I think I have a manual I could copy if no longer avaible from Deere

Thanks for the suggestion. I have done as you've suggested. I did lift the clutch wheel, pulled the lever and nothing as I turned the wheel. I even dragged the plow around a bit behind the tractor and pulled the lever. Still nothing. How big is the spring in the housing? I'm not risking my life with a huge spring flying out as I disassemble am I?

Thanks in advanced for you advice.

The spring is just to return the clutch lever to home and hold it there untill next trip

If a 52 trip is anything like a model 44, you have to pull the plow forward to get it to lift. If you are doing that, it seems that there is a spring inside the case that can break. Otherwise, the case could be full of frozen grease.
