I went to a sale today down in Loysburg PA. Was trying to pick up a two row planter. One there pull behind IHC model 56 was in pretty fair shape. I thought it would go for couple hundred bucks. It brought $450- had the gandy boxes on and disc openers. The fert. box had a few pin holes in the bottom- not to bad though. Is that what I should expect to pay for one? They had a JD three point too but it was rough- no gandy boxes and one fert. box rusted clean off and it brought $75. Should I expect to up my anti or keep shopping? What are they bringing in your area? Thanks in advance.

At the expense of sounding dumb, what is a gandy box? I have a JD 247 2 row planter and don't know if I have gandy boxes or not.

That is an after market herbicide or insecticide attachment for granular product, mostly used on IHC

Probably were Amish or Mennonites or their buyers there. They still use planters that size to be pulled by horses to make their living, not as a toy to plant a couple acres.

I just sent you an e-mail. If you're serious and if I can't find something reasonable around here, that might just be worth the trip. I can go that far and back for not much $$. Certainly less than $450. Thanks for all the responses.

I just bought a JD 70 planter. I bought it thru the local wheeler - dealer paper. I paid $300 for it. It is a 4 row, so I have some work to do cutting it down. This is the best time of year to look for them. Easy

That may just be my other option too, if I don't find a two row soon. 4-row planters seem to go cheaper.

A good 2-row planter is going to go for that much in PA/MD/DE/NJ area. Wengers sells several 2-rows a year in the $800 to $1000 range.

I saw 2 at an auction last fall and I didn't think they were going to get a bid. Finally put they 2 together and they brought 45 bucks. In my opinion 25 more than they were worth..... ..Good luck....just wait you'll get one.....

Hey Dieselrider, I don't know where Loysburg is, but around central Pa (we farm near Sunbury) when we were looking for one they seemed to bring good money. However that was a while back. We have a later model 4 row that we use to plant our 75 acres of corn every year. We have had it for approx. 14-15 years now. We gave about $900 for ours. However it is in excellent shape, and has always been shedded. To some this may seem like a lot but it a nice unit. Has gandy boxes which we don't use, rubber coated firming wheels and fiberglass boxes all around. The biggest problem with these planters in my experience is that the bearing set's that you get from CaseIH for the opener disks are about worthless. They are a no brainer to install but they only last at the most three seasons of use. We installed all new opener disks last year and several of the bearings are allready shot. That's only 75 acres of planting till they are dead. My dad and I are very fussy about maintenance on equipment so they don't go out from neglect. Could be that they are to small of a bearing for the load that they support. Everytime you hit a rock, and the disk's ride up over it those two little bearings support the entire weight of the planter unit including the seed until the load is transferred to the runner part of the unit. My buddy has a 455 4 row and has the same trouble with the bearings. As a comparison on price I had seen a two row sold about a year after we bought ours in next to new shape for around $700. We would love to upgrade to a plateless planter, either a Kinze or a newer CaseIH. However too many other recent purchases have put a hold on this for now. As for an honest opinion on price I can't tell you what they are going for right now. The only advise that I can offer is to check the bearings on double disk opener units before buying. I definetely think this is a weak point in these units. Good luck on your search. Have a good one.

Last Saturday at an auction, I bought an IH #56 4 row planter with the gandy boxes. There wasn"t much left of them though. Other wise it seems to be in good shape. I gave $45 for it. I know I was bidding against the junk men. Usually they bring around $100.

If you're cheap, you must be like me. Around here I would expect 50-150 for what you were looking at. And the 150 was with a large gratuity!.
