I was wondering if anyone has used the RFM-72 King Kutter finish mower. It is rear discharge and has some pretty cool looking features. Brand new it is $1,295.00, about $900.00 less than Bush Hog and $600.00 less than a Landpride. I am looking for a used one but can't find a decent one.

I have a 72" KIng Kutter. Works great if you remember it's a LAWN MOWER not a brush mower. I'm actually selling mine because my lawn around my pond works better with the flail mower. Because of the 4 wheels the mower actually wants to run downhill even with stablizer bars. Let me know if you're interested. It's 2 years old and in SE WISC. Thanks!

If you are planning to mow your yard a finish mower will be fine, but if you are planing to mow a pasture they won"t stand up, all they are is a glorified lawn mower, many have tried mowing fields with them that"s why you can"t find one in good shape, they can"t take it. If you have a golf course go for it anything rougher you need a rhino or brushhog.

I already have a 6 ft rotary mower for the rough stuff. I built a new house in the middle of a 20 acre wheat field so I want the finish mower to do the front 6 acres. The rotary mower doesn"t leave the grass looking to nice. The big question about the King Kutter is that it is a free floating design that I am not familar with. I know that Landpride or Woods are much better, but they are well over $1,000 more around here.

If your land isn't rough, free of rocks and small trees and is pretty leval a finish mower will do the job just remember that what you have with a finish mower is a large riding mower and the blades and such aren't very strong, if the ground is uneven or rocky you might look into a flail mower they do a great job and if you do hit a rock all you replace a tip (cheap) as opposed to a whole blade (expensive) I have seen several guys around here buy used finish mowers and end up putting $200 to $500 in them to get them to mow right, so what it all boils down to if you have a large lawn go for the finish mower if its rough and rutted go with a flail or rotary, as far as your original question about the King Kutter as opposed to woods or brushhog you can kind of look at it like riding mowers (Johndeer-Woods) (Walmart brand-King Kutter) Look at the gearbox hp rating of both and the gauge of the metal they are made out of, you will see the price difference. Hope all this mess helps, Happy Mowing.

My opinion... there is a very good reason why KK is less money than LP or BH. It"s quality of product. Just like the difference between the cost of hamburger and prime rib or Cadillac and GEO.

I've used a 5 foot King Kutter side discharge for the past 4 years to cut 3+ acres of pasture.

There are a couple of things to think about. First, the wider the mower the more likely to scalp uneven ground. The "free floating" feature is the mower is pulled with the 3 point hitch all the way down and it runs on 4 small wheels on each corner of the deck. It has a roller in the center.

Second, I'd get one wide enough to cut the tire tracks your tractor leaves.

If your grass gets much higher than about 8 inches, you will probably need to bush hog rather than mow as the pto drive gear box turns the belt driven spindles and if you load it up to much the belt might slip which can cause premature failure of the belt.

One of the things I don't like is the tires. I have to fix a couple of flats a year. Most of the people I know with other brands also have the same tire problems.

I've had fine service out of my King Kutter, only replaced the belt and blades. King Kutters customer service is good, and the blades and belts arrived in a couple of days after ordering them.

Thanks Bill, one concern I have with the free floating thing is that chain on the top link. I do have a pretty good hill to mow and it looks like there would be nothing to prevent it from coming over on top of the tractor! I have found a Landpride FDR72 for $600.00 more so I am starting to lean that way.
