I previously mowed about 12 acres 2 times a year with a Kingcutter 5ft mower (rated at 40hp) with a Ford 600 (30hp).I now have a Oliver 1550 (50+hp).Somebody told me I need a bigger mower now.In the past if I got into too thick of a brush the mower would attempt to stall the tractor so I would back off.Am I to assume that wont happen with the bigger tractor and damage the mower? Also the 5ft mower seemed to be just about the same width as my smaller tractor,I was told thats the way it should be as a minimum. Is that a mowing convienence or a must. Now I do have adjustable axles on my Oliver, but I have a front end loader also and have them all the way out for stability. Also is it any inconvienence mowing with a frontend loader on,is it worth taking off?

Thanks Stan

what you need is a good slip clutch to prevent over powering chopper ,and in heavy brush only take 1/2 swaths this make it easier on mower and you rechop the debris from last pass for a cleaner job.

Wow.. your 134ci red tiger engine in that 600 must have been wore slap out. That 34.x hp engine will power a 6' mower. Over on the N board we pretty much run 5' mowers on the 9n/2n/8n and that works out fairly well in all but the thickest material they havve a 119.x ci flathead engine... The jubilee, NAA, and hundred series have that 134ci ohv engine.

Also it's generally accepted to cover your rear tire tracks with your mower.. etc.

A 50 hp tractor could tote a 7' mower. If you check out the howse website and look at their hd line, the 8 and 10' mower recomends 55-80 tractor hp, 7' 50-80 hp, and if you drop down to the economy line.. you can get into the 35 hp range. etc.

7' would shave a bit of time off your cutting. And if it gets a tad thick.. make a 6' pass.. instead of a full pass. The mowers themselves aren't much difference in price.. etc. And then you would have the option of the 7' pass if the material was 'normal'.

The Oliver will handle a bigger mower, and you'll probably find a bigger one handier with the bigger tractor. One that is the same width as the wheels is usually a nice match. If you are careful not to overpower the mower by going too fast, you can still use your 5'.

Having ripped out a gearbox with a large tractor, high centering on a terrace, I would just like to add that the HP rating of the gearbox on the mower and your shear pin/slip clutch setting are your concerns.

Most 5' mowers have a 45 HP box. Easy to overpower with a larger tractor.

Other thing is I bet your Oliver's rear wheels are outside the cutting diameter of 5' so you can't get a clean cut.
