I am going to be planting about 50 acres of alfalfa this year. I am looking for an economical way to plant. Types, make and model suggestions most appreciated.

With or without a cover crop? Around here you could find a 10 foot drill for 2-300 dollars, good for about 30 acres per day. Alfalfa in the grass seeder attachment, oats, barley, wheat in the big box, or just the alfalfa by itself with no cover crop. Alfalfa only- a Brillion seeder is a great way to seed- takes less seed because the packers make a better seedbed.

Hello,
last year we planted 22 acres of alfalfa. Didn't use a planter or drill. We needed to put some nutriments on the fields, so we used all granular from the local coop. We had them mix up a batch for us in the coop wagon with the pto operated broadcast in the back. We also had them calulate for us how much alfalfa to plant. They mixed it all for us in the wagon, and brought it out to us. The cost of the wagon was $3.00 per acre. Worth every penny too. We prepared the soil by discing it down, and smoothed it some with a harrow. Then we took off pulling the wagon, spreading everything which was mixed for us. It worked very well. The trips over the field took us four times to empty the wagon, and then some to completly empty the wagon. The results were very good. The alfalfa came up gang busters! Shortly before the first cutting, the leaf hoppers invaded and it was necessary to spray it. Bottom line the alfalfa was cut three times the first year. It really came on strong.

Alfalfa seed is small. It shouldn't be seeded with anything intended for "grass seed". Most grain drills have a small seed attachment on them. That's the way you need to go in my opinion. Look for a decent old drill (like an FB-B Deere) After years of hard use, most of them have rusted out fertilizer hoppers, and can be found real cheap at farm sales.

"Plan B"..... Contact your county extention office to see if they rent a no-till drill. Most do. Not cheap, but good equipment usually.

Our county rental price is $8.00 per acre. Not too bad if you consider: no purchase, no upkeep and no storage. Try to consider all of your options.
