I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with a new idea 250 semi mounted sickle mower and a new holland 456 pull type mower. I need a new one for this season and was wondering what one was more reliable and ease of getting parts. Also is there anyone who sells new idea? Are they still in business? I am not familiar with them in this area. Thanks in advance for the info

thanks everyone for your input. Sounds like I can go either way and be okay. There is an agco dealer fairly close by and I wasnt sure but thought the NI was part of them. As always the people on this site come through. Also sorry about the three posts, it was late when I posted this and my fingers must have got heavy.

Ok. No email so this link should take you to Agco's dealer search and you should be able to find you nearest New Idea dealer.

If I'm not wrong, you're talking new mowers here. The New Idea is still being made. At least New Idea sent me a brochure (spec sheet) for their mower last summer. If I rememeber this right, they have both the three point mount and the pull type. You can go to their web site and they have a dealer search on there. I didn't notice if you left your email address or not but when I finish this note I will look for their dealer search site and send you the link if I can.
If I were buying a new one, I personally would go with the New Holland since there's a New Holland dealer on every corner in the area where I live. I have at least four that are close to me.
From all I've seen and heard about these two companies, both have great products so support in your area will probably sway you one way or the other.
good luck,
mee

I have a NI 256 mower that has served me well for several years. Only drawback is the breakaway makes it a bit funny to hook up as it is good at getting in the way and it takes a few tries to line everything up. Runs nice and quiet too, not shakey. My Grandfather bought a NH pull type mower about 1960 or so and that thing will cut anything, down or thick without plugging. My uncle still uses it when his swather is down. Good luck

The 456 New Holland is still currently made. I doubt that the New Idea is still made, but if someone can tell me they are, I stand corrected. John Deere made very good mowers, but I will put New Holland's cutting ability up against anyone else's. One thing I will admit though, New Holland's pitman area is a little bit high maintance. Keep it WELL GREASED. Steve
