I've had my 846 for 8 years, I only bale 300-400 a year, Depends on hay and your windrows but I seldom get a 850# bale. I just figure 700-750# They are 4'wide which is easy hauling and my hay buyers like the size also. Most of my buyers are horse owners and I store all my hay inside. Mine is manual tie, It does take longer but I can vary the string per bale depending on hay. I oil my chains about every 40 bales and I use a good chain bar oil seems to last longer. I am putting in new floor chains and rails this winter but that's been the only repair. I can't complain about 846 it does what I need and it's paid for itself several times here on my farm.

We wore out a 846 and then a 847 that we replaced it with. Good balers, easy to use, low repair bills, nice size bale to transport. Made a soft, poor weathering bale though (always a catch). Used a 5600 Ford with them (62 or so hp). It handled it well, on hills (class IV land and class VI) it made it scream pretty good esp with a full roll. Auto wrap is great, but some upkeep, manual tie is slow but simple, hydraulic tie was a head ache (had it on an 851). Sell for $2800-$5000 here depending on condition.

I used an 847 baler for years. I don"t think there is much difference in the 2 models. 846 was made 1978-80. Book calls for 850 pound bales, 51x54 bales. Disadvantages: Chains have to be oiled, the big chains are no problem to oil but you have to reach in over the running pick up to oil the drag chains in the floor. Replacement chains are expensive. Ask a dealer for todays prices. I used a 60 hp tractor to pull the baler and it was a load. Variable chamber belt balers are easier to pull and the belts are easier to repair.
Advantages: According to people who bale cornstalks, chain balers hold up better for that, I dont know since I dont bale cornstalks. The chains aren"t troubled as much by sticks, etc in the hay, but sticks can bend the crossbars.
New Holland balers dont do too well if stored outside due to rust, so check carefully. (other makes dont do too well either} Oh yes, the floor under the drag chains can wear out due to friction. I welded flat strips of metal in the bottom, so you can check for those repairs.
Dont know about value, but they dont sell for very much here. Less than $1000? Hope this helps.
