Anybody know anything about a JD 9W sicle mower. I bought one. It looks like it is made for a three point but, it has arms extending past the side arm brackets. I don't know if it has been modified or not. Any information or picture of the original configuration would be appreciated.
what are they worth?

I have a JD #9 which is very similar to the 9W. The arms you talk about should have some brackets bolted to them. The brackets then clamp to the lift arms with u-bolts to give added stability. I don't know if the mower can be used without clamping to the lift arms, I've never tried that. It sounds like you may be missing the brackets that mount on your mystery arms. I have some pictures of my #9 mounted on my Ford 800 but none of the pictures shows the brackets I'm talking about very clearly.

I think they are a good mower if in reasonale condition. The extensions have been described below, an operator"s manuel will show how to hook them up. The W was just a wider frame for use with tractors with wheels set out wider. Get parts book and operator"s manuel and it will help you out a lot.

I have a 9W and the two arms you mention require special brackets which attach to the the 3 point lift arms. I have brackets for both the Waterloo and Dubuque tractors having the regular 3-point, not the 800-801 hitches, etc. I bought my best mower at a junk yard for $25, unfortunately I had earlier sent someone to bid on another one at an auction and he bought a piece of junk for $150. Had to buy the second one to salvage the 1st. Threw everything but the bar and sickle away on the $150 mower. I would guess a 9W in good condition would be worth maybe $150. In my opinion unless you are wanting to have the correct vintage for your tractor, I would suggest buying a newer mower.

We have either a 9 or a 9W, the arms that extend past the pins on the 3pt. bolt to your lift arms with a couple of U bolts.
