Sloppy NH 55 Rake Powershaft

I recently bought a this rake at an auction. It appears to be in good shape except for the powershaft between the drive wheel and the gear box. The U joint at the wheel is loose, and the square shafts have alot of play - you can turn the inner shaft about 30 degrees. My question is, do these rakes stay like this for years, or should I be looking to replace this soon. Also, is there any special trick to removing this shaft ? I took out the pin in the yoke at the gear box, but it doesn't want to separate. Do I just need heat, or is there something else there.
I can get the yoke off at the wheel.

Thanks !

My Dad purchased our NH 55 rake over 40 years ago and as long as I can remember the power shaft has had the same slop in it. That is one area of the rake that we've never had to do any major maintenance on, I believe we replaced a u-joint about twenty years ago but that's about it. I use it on about 150 acres every summer, great rake!Personally I wouldn't worry about it.

Good Luck! Ernie Bob

Those shafts all have about 30 degrees of "twist" in them. That is to say the yokes are not completely in phase. A brand new shaft assembly will be the same. Not to say yours isn't also worn and sloppy. The square bore in the lower yoke isn't parallel with the yoke ears. The upper yoke on a 55 is pinned, but is also a semi press fit. 56 and newer upper yokes are forged in one piece with the shaft.

I believe the telescoping shaft you are talking about is sold as one piece for about $110. My 56 has about the same amount of play as yours. I am debating weather or not to replace it this winter. I'm sure it has been worn for a long time, but with about 85 acres of hay, I'll kick myself if that thing goes out this summer.

I wouldn't worry about it. As little as that shaft turns, as long as it doesn't slip inside one of them you are fine. We have used ours like that for as long as i can remember. It works great and that piece is worth more than the rake. And in response to the original message, I would be carefull with heating, that could mess up the seals in the gearbox. Ours are out almost, so we filled it with grease.

We have a rollbar 256 that is an old sperry nh, it has about 30 degrees of twist in these shafts if you are talking about the square ones that go to the gearbox from the wheel. When you say you can't get teh yolk off the wheel, does that mean with the bar still on there, because the long bar that connects the 2 wheels has to be removed first I believe by taking out the universal. Let me know if you need any more help and ill try to remember as best i can. Im away at school, so i don't have a rake with me right now. Good luck.

Sorry I wasn't clear - I can remove the yoke on the wheel side of the powershaft, it's the yoke at the gear box end that doesn't want to come off.
The 55 only has 2 universals, both on the powershaft - the wheels aren't staggered like all of the other Rolabars.

And the 30 degrees of play I was talking about is twist in the square shafts, just like you're describing.

Thanks

Mine just came off with the pin out; however I believe they have a grease seal O ring built into that yoke, so it might pry off a little harder if yours is actually in good shape yet.
