Some of their literature has testimonials from owners if they can be considered true. Those user comments all sound great but then I wouldn't expect them to publish bad testimonials!

I have a Woods 5000 with 5 inch feed chute, will grind up anything you can fit in, feed brush in the top with caution, really grabs and goes up there, keep the bottom area clear

on fairly straight limber stuff like pine, really does a good job, elm goes bit slower but chips up great

when I got to the 5 acres of overgrown crabapple, those small limbs are fairly strong and spread out so much that you cannot push them into the chute, wound up with 3 huge piles for the bunnies to winter in, dream about a 14 inch power feed but they cost plenty

I emailed them and asked why the top discharge did not come out first? I am not a fan of creating work, I like to eliminate it. If I spray the chips on the ground, I have to take the time to scoop them up and move them where they can be used. My next question was why is the top discharge about 19% higher in price than the bottom discharge unit? I have yet to get any reply. Not the kind of noncommunication I would expect from someone trying to sell equipment.

My opinion is, it's light duty and ment for a homeowner to clean up a small amount of brush once in a while. If that's you? you will be happy with it, if not, then you will wish you would have rented one, or spent the $$ that a decent sized one cost...

I am not planning on running a tree service with one of these, but would probably use it about 5-10 weekends a year to chip mulberries and anything else too small for firewood.

Anyone actually have one or use one?

I would be suprised if the DR can handle the power of a 504. We looked at one and thought it was not built very strong. We ended up buying a Bearcat non-power feed which is advertised to handle 5 inch stuff. Power limit was 35 bhp. Our experience is that it will handle any thing you can force thru it, but you had better be a relative of Paul Bunyan to do it very long. The real test is to run hedge thru! After hammering thru a few pieces of 3-3.5 inch stuff with two adults forcing it in, you finally come to your senses and stick to nothing bigger than 1.5-2 inch hedge, and even that is no small task. Less dense wood still no bigger than 3 inches. We now only use it for small stuff, fire is a lot quicker and easier on the body. If you do much chipping, plan on buying some gloves that have some vibration isolating properties.

This is helpful info thanks everyone.

Seems like a big feature is the automatic feed which this machine doesn't have.

That didn't occur to me before.

I like to be able to start a piece and go head for another.

Maybe I'll stick to the rentals for now.

I think that is a good idea. We have a Vermeer 906 brush chipper for the tractor and it does a great job. It has a very long feed table which makes it safe. We put an oak limb in to it about 7" in diameter and about killed our 2750 JD. We really like out chipper although it was expensive compared to the little stuff like DR, but it is built like a tank.
