I am looking at an IH 440 baler with a thrower. I have an old model 37 That I have been using but its tired. I have a dealer close by for parts and Know the IH balers some. Was wondering what its worth and any known problems with that model? Its been barn kept and has not been used for three years. Farmer said it worked good last time he used it.

I waited a while to see if anyone would respond. With a few exceptions posters on this board seems to dislike IH balers, worship JD and generally think NH is OK. I have a JD 24T and it does a good job but capacity is marginal. A friend has a IH 430 which will bury my 24T. From what I understand, near the production end of the subsequent/final series; eg 425, 435, 445, etc, an improved knotter similar to JD's version was released. Prevaling opinion is that it was a lot better knotter. Neither my friend with the 430, nor another individual I know with a 420, nor someone with a 45 (old but in excellant shape), have never had any tieing problems. Maybe its the water. Another complaint is that the bale ends are not square. That could very well be. Neither myself or the individuals mentioned above, seem to be effected by this issue. Perhaps if we were shipping long distances, or selling to thoroughbred horse farms this would be a problem. I think $1000-1200 would be reasonable if was in very good to excellent condition. JD aficionados fire at will! Finally, if I had free choice, and wanted the best all around baler, I would probably buy an NH.

James,
Thanks for the reply. I have a IH 37 now and it has served me well. I just need to get one with a thrower on it and found this 440. Guess if I had free choice I would pick something newer. My biggest problem with NH is the closest dealer for parts makes you want to buy something else. I do have JD equipment too and like it but,I havn't hit the lottery yet.
