Gehl 817 Feed Grinder

My feed mill will be closing in July and I still plan on running a few head of cattle and hogs. I've come across a Gehl 817 down the road and has been sitting in barn 2-3 years since he passed away and now his kids are wanting to clear out some of his old equipment I've never been around grinder mixer always went to the mill. I have a couple of 70hp tractors and usually go thru about 800-1200bu corn a year. Anything big I should look for and any idea what something like that is worth? It's been inside and looks to have about a inch of feed dust over it? Any comments would be appreciated.

never worked on (or heard of) a 817 (Is it a hammer mill or roller mill?) I don't remember the roller mill #'s. (the owner's manual pouch may be inside the main drive belt housing).. worked on and used a Gehl 170 (mid 90's). good units with a VERY long history. most parts are probably still available. Like combines and haybalers they don't care for being wet. the feed dust holds moisture and rots them out. IF its been inside its whole life it should be ok. main drive belts could be dry-rot but not too big a deal. like Bob's suggestion. give'r some grease and try your tractor on it. Condition, built in scales, auger extentions, hay in-feeder, ect ect could add to value of unit. good luck

If possible I would hook it to a tractor and see how it runs, maybe they would even let you run some feed through it. I have seen them sell for anywhere from $200 to $2500 depending on the age and condition. We ran our old Gehl, don't remember the size with our IH 460, but also used our Farmall M from time to time. I think the hammer mill was 18 inches wide.
