Fixing up hay rake questions

We have an old New Holland 56 rake that we decided to fix up this winter, new teeth, gear box seals and paint. I have two questions, NH says decals are no longer availble. Is there another source other than NH? If I can't find any I am going to get 256 decals and cut the '2' off. Second, because I don't want over spray on every thing in my shop could a guy pull the rake outside(rake would be warm from being in heated shop) spray it and push it right back in? My only concern doing this is the paint hitting the cold air as it leaves the gun.

John,

The standard NH 56 decal set is part # 48945 and is still available for $25.09

As Shep commented, it sounds like you have a lazy parts man. By giving him the part # and price, you may be able to motivate him enough to get you the kit.

When assembling the gearbox, pack all the bearings and then add 2 tubes of grease before you bolt the cover on. No more oil and leaks!

I also don"t like to paint in my shop. I pick a good day and do it outside. Never tried it in the winter, though.

Here is the one that I did 5 years ago. The best thing to do is to start at one end and take out every bolt and take off every bracket and clean both the attachment and where it attaches to. Then get a couple of rattle cans from NH and prime and paint the mating surfaces and reassemble. Go to the next set of bolts. I went ahead and bought a box of 1/2 x 1 carriage bolts and planned on replacing all of them with new bolts. Then the final paint was fairly quick and easy because all of the nooks and crannies had been taken care of

I have two NH 56 hay rakes that we run in a rake bridge. Overhauled one about 2 years ago and painted it. Got the decals from New Holland, were maybe $50 for the decals. They are still avaliable, you just have a lazy parts man.

There is a service bulliton that you now put grease in your gear boxes instead of oil, that pretty much stops your leaking problems at the gear box.

I painted mine outside one fall, worked good, just had to watch the weather a little.

Get some cheap plastic and hang it over the walls of the shop. I have tried to beat the weather and paint outside, and it has never worked well.

I did the same thing, fixed up a 56. I pissed off the old man, painted it ford blue because I had a gallon. Man, he went nuts, swore he would never rake with it. He did, but he would not pull it with his truck to the fields, I had to. Anyway, I bought the parts manual and will look for the sticker because I did get them.

I would put up plastic and paint in your shop. Or, wait to spring. You can e-mail me or I will try to remember to get my manual and let you know those numbers. I am sure I bought them.
