Vermeer round Baler

I'm making the move from square bales to round. So I've been learning about the different color balers. I like to go vermeer if I can find a good used one for around $5000.00 that will fit my hay operation and tractor. Has anyone ever used the two vermeer dealers here in michigan for service and parts? Chaffee Farm Service located in Weidman, and Vermeer Ag. of south west michigan located in Marshall mich.

My operation consist of a Ford 3930 45pto/hp weights about 6500lbs with out my quick attach loader. An a farmall M used for wagon hauling and raking. I do about 40 acres of flat/gently rolling fields three time's a year of alfalfa/grass mix hay.

So which vermeer baler will fit my needs and pocket book. Will I have enough hp for making round bale's? I've been following Dr. Hay posts about changing the main drive gear from 12 to 13 tooth. Which vermeer baler's can this be done too?

I have a 503I an dlove it, great machine. You will be on the edge with 45 hp though, get the bale up to full size and slopes, she will be working. I baled for 6 years with my IH 584 and it worked well, 60 HP machine, but she still talked to me when full and slopes. Most of my fields have some slopes, eastern Mass, not flat lands. I bought a 1066 this winter and can't wait to bale with that. She will be in retirement with the 503I behind it, which will be nice. I think th ebaler will work better with a lot of HP. You will be happy with Vermeer. Good luck.

My 2 cents would recommend a 403F. I"ve had one for years and appreciate the smaller size bale. It is built extremely well. However, this is now an orphan baler.

Only a few hundred 403 balers were made so they are rear but you still see some around. For $5,000 you should be able to find one of the first 504I balers.

I forgot about the 403 thanks for bringing it up. My guess is that they are not as common as the 504. There are only 2 in NC that I know of. The 3930 would pull that baler fine.

I have a 605F I have pulled it with a 460 Farmall, but the 756 and 706 pulls it much better. I haven't sold it yet but 3 years ago I was doing some feeling and it sounded like 2500 to 3000. so I would think a 504F would be in that range also.

I would suggest a 504 in the F,G,H, and I series. If you don't find anything used and consider new look at the 5400 Rebel. The F,G, and H series might require the sprocket change you mentioned. You would not have to do that to the I and the Rebel. You can also add restrictor plates to the bale chamber to reduce HP requirements. These plates deflect hay away from the side of the baler which reduces friction between the bale and the sides of the baler. This in turn reduces the power to turn the bale. The end of the bales look more ragged with these plates in. They can be had for all models listed. I would recomend them for use with your tractor if you are not going to sell your hay. The F,G,H and early I's will fit your budget.
