I have a hobby farm in southern Ky. We're putting in sweet corn, berries, & fruit trees this year. I would like to spray round-up but I am wondering if I can get by with just 1 sprayer. Can the round-up be cleaned adequately after use so the sprayer can be used for insecticide with out damaging the trees & crops? Being that I work rotating shiftwork by Louisville I cann't always be home to cultivate when the weather is cooperating. Thanks in advance. John

Fill roller pump with oil or store it in bucket of fuel. I've rinsed them and they still lock up after sitting exposed to air.

I picked up a brand new Fimco sprayer (55 gal tank, 12 ft spraybar w/nozzles, hand sprayer, controls, and 3 pt frame) for $450 brand new last fall. Added a Hi-Pro roller pump and I'm looking to go after the white top, rattle weed, and broadleaf weeds in my pastures this Spring. I could have designed my own system but I couldn't have put it together so cheaply and quickly.

Thanks Gentlemen. That's the answer I was hoping to hear. Now it's time to pay attention to the auction listings. I hope to avoid having to get a license as I doubt if it would pay even the $ for the application much less the time and aggravation for me. IDF I live just south of Columbia but I work in Valley Village as a Shift Supervisor for LG&E so I'm up there for half of my time(I stay there for my shifts) Thanks again. John

One more thing... I'd recommend getting in touch with "Tee-Jet" for their pamphlet on sprayer set-up. I picked one up at the National Farm Machinery Show last week. It is a very informative little book. There are a host of new jets (nozzles) out on the market lately. (Most are in anticipation of fungacide spraying due to asian rust in/on soybeans)

I have a vast collection of literature on various sprayers from just about anyone that sells one nowdays. (I just bought a new one last week myself) I'll leave my email uncovered, so you can contact me if you'd like. If all goes well, I'll have a scanner up and running this weekend, so I could send you some of the info via the computer!

I set up a sprayer for "spot-spraying". It has a 65 gallon plastic tank, 14' boom, and a 25' hose equipped gun. I used a 6 roller PTO pump, Tee Jet "no-drip" nozzles, and an agitator, for less than $700. All new stuff... The componants are readily available from a number of local sources.

Be glad to help!

I use the same sprayer for everything. Indy gives you good advice, just keep it clean. 2,4-D is the one you really want to watch for, it will bond chemically to fiberglass tanks. Glyphosates can get real ugly if used in a metal tank unless its stainless. It gives off hydrogen gas.

Absolutely, you can do it all with one sprayer.

1st off, if you use round-up (or any generic Glyphosate product) you need to clean your sprayer well after each use. It will destroy the cast iron in your PTO pump if you don't (Glyphosate is a salt) There are "sprayer cleaners" available at most farm supply centers. (TSC stores carry 'em too)

I use one sprayer for round-up, 2-4D products, insecticides, liquid fertilizers and a host of other pesticides. If you're doing this on your own land, all is well. If you're doing it on someone elses property, or doing it for hire, you need to be licensed by the state. Also, there are a host of "restricted use chemicals" that you can't buy without that same license.

I have the info on testing for that permit, should you need it. Let me know.

I live just south of Louisville myself.
