5o acres is a lot for a one row planter.

I'd look for an old JD 494 or IH 56 plate planter for corn and peas. You might find that 4 row is less expensive than 2. I'd also look for an old transplanter for the watermellons.

A step up would to get a finger planter for the corn and peas plus a plastic layer and water wheel planter for the watermellons and other transplantable crops.

Air or vacume planters might be too much maintenance for only 50 acres.

Comes down to how much you want to spend

Go with 2 rows at least. Driving back and forth across your field will get tedious pretty quickly. And then, you will be able to cultivate two rows at a time also.

I was looking at a Milton planter at an ag show last Friday, seemed like a nice unit and actually built in the USA. 1 row would be no problem.

Leon, Your tractor will handle a 2row, 3pt planter very easily. Finding a single all by its lonesome will be difficult to find. A pair will be easier to locate. My suggestion would be a set of JD 71 Flex planters. Parts are redilly avaible from JD and it matches too. Hope this helps!
Later,
John A
