Lou,Way back when I still had hair and no kids we pulled 4x14 mounted with a 65 gas MF and 4x16 semi mount with the 165 diesel, good ground very little clay. Uncle`s 175 gas wouldn`t pull the 4x16 thats how we got it. Price wise around here(North MO)you can still buy a good 4x for $100.00 and take one plow off and have a cheap 3x.

In s.w. Pa, a 3 bottom 14 inch mounted plow would be about perfect for a tractor that sized. You could hang 2000 lbs of extra weight & plow in crawl gear and pull four bottom; but you're better off rolling along with three.

Not to be too disagreeable, but we had some rocks and I always thought that it was a lot better to hit them at 3.0-3.5 mph rather than 5-5.5 mph. Also you are correct that we did load the tires and used the cast iron rims. But my experience would indicate that you needed the extra weight to do subsequent tillage anyway.

Others may say this is too much plow, but a neighbor pulled a JD 4-16 mounted plow with his MF175 and we pulled a MF82 4-16 mounted plow with our MF265 (replaced the 175). Did this for many years.

Forgot to mention that they were use in a clay based soil, no sand. However I have plowed a little in pure clay and no doubt 4-16 full moldboard is too much. If I had pure clay, I would use a 4-16 slatted moldboard plow.

And if you can"t find a 4-16 slat bottom, just put a 3-16 regular bottom on the back. Better to have too much tractor than too much plow. Do you have a lot of rocks in the clay? Plows with automatic reset beams exist in 3-16" mounted versions (just saw an MF 345 last fall on auction, IH 450 also comes to mind), but might cost too much for what you want to do.

I have a MF 43 3-16 that is about right for a 175. I pull it with a 666 IH.

Thanks for all the replies. No not too rocky where Ill be plowing, sounds like I need a 3 bottom 16. Im not formiliar with the different type of mould boards, ( did I spell that right? ) thanks Lou Around $100. would be nice.

I don"t know where you live, but one can get a 3-16 around here for $100-$150 but will end up putting $200+ in wear parts on it to make it work well. $350-$400 will buy one ready to plow and save some labor and frustration.
