I have had the 290 pull type, 246 3 point hitch and the 1240 plate and plateless planters. I really liked the plateless planter the best as far as seed placement. It was a pain though if you were just going to plant a little patch trying to empty the seed meters out. I now have the plated model and for the most part am happy with it. I still have a few bugs to work out of it. I was just wondering what you guys thought? I keep thinking someday when I strike the lottery I'll get a 7000.

I agree the #71 units are nice, I went from a 290 to a 494 then a 1240 and now a 7000 planter.I only plant 50-70 acres a year.If I hadnt found this 7000 planter (only planted 400 acres)I would say dollar for dollar my 1240 plate planter would be the cheapest investment for the few acres. A big key is to make sure you replace the seed knock outs in the seed box often and you will get a good even seed spacing. Now that I own the 7000 I wont go back but then have 10 times the investment compared to the good old 1240, good luck Bill

For what you're doing, a #71 flex planter would be a better choice. I have a 2 row for doing sweetcorn and green beans. I have an 8 row 7200 planter that does the BIG stuff. The #71 units are a more advanced, and MUCH more simplified version of the earlier 246. LOTS less moving parts. Easier to set up. They fit on any toolbar. I know where 5 units are at, priced very reasonable. If you're interested, my email addy is open. I'll stear you to them.

I agree the JD 71 units are very flexible and can be made into any row configuration. BUT, nothing does a better job of putting the seed in the ground than the Max Emerge (7000's 7200's etc.) planter units will. If you are planting any amount of acres at all, your yeild increase(I'm talking corn here) will more than offset the higher purchase price.
