Vermeer 605c, 4 inch belts vis 10 inch belts

My Vermeer 605c has 4 inch belts. Someone said to change them over and put 10 inch belts on, will make a much better round bale. Or would I be better to change baler to a 605g ?

We have done several C balers with 10" belts on the outside. It will help the bale get started and help pack the corners. The are less likely to flip over, but they will flip over and are more trouble to get unflipped. If I had to bale with a C baler I would put the 10" belts on the outside. I would much rather bale with a newer open throat baler. If you put new belts on the baler make sure that all the belts are the same length this is really important to the baler working properly.

I have a 605D. Is it worth the time to go to extra 10 in belts? My machine gathers wads by the cleaning fingers on the right side, between the two 4 in belts after the outer 10 in ones, so I am thinking a wider belt would solve that.

Had my 605C over 20 years, bale alfalfa/orchard grass mix on 40+ acres 3 cuttings in western Iowa. We took out the outside 2 -4" belts on each side and replaced with single 10" on each side. Left the rest at 4". Makes firmer ends on bales now. This will help, but if the rest of the baler is not in good shape you may be able to update 10-15 years cheaper than fixing yours.
I like the C's' simple nothing I can't fix at home, no labor $$$$ for repairs.

every one puts down a C baler . what did you have in early 70s ????.here in east texas costal was baled that way, wore one out.have one as a back up...yep wont bale alfia. will bale grass hay .will bale to day. any one want to come watch????.went to two f's to super j.life is is good in TRACTOR seat. try it.

We have the first 605 Vermeer baler we purchased in 1971 and was delivered in 1972. We pull her out for shows. She has baled close to 100,000 bales and would bale today if the hay is ready but time moves on and the Vermeer 605M is the king these days.

Be careful because a set of 10" belts may be worth more than the baler. 10" belts will help but a later model will be more satisfying in the long-term.

I think you'd be much happier with an open-throat baler; personally, I wouldn't put any money in a "C" model. Have had both "C" and "F" model Vermeers..... .the "F" is much more user friendly..... ..

I've never used a C, but I'd also vote for not putting money into a closed throat, go for the newer machine.
