Live PTO

I am considering purchasing a MF 135 (1966). It has a live PTO, but it isn't an independent PTO and doesn't have a two stage clutch. AS I understand it, this means that there is a single clutch that engages and disengages the transmission and PTO at the same time (if the PTO lever is engaged). I was wondering if this causes any issues when mowing or rototilling that would keep me from purchasing the tractor for these purposes. From what I know of this type of PTO, it would basically continue to turn when I got to the end of a row unless I depressed the clutch. In addition when I start, the mower wouldn't begin to spin up until I let up off the clutch. This seems to create situtations where I would be engaging the mower at the same time the tractor begins to move forward. Typically I have used tractors where you get the implement up to speed before you start moving the tractor forward.

Willard: You are indeed being misled, but I think I can see what is misleading you. MF 135 have a two function PTO. With the pto shift lever in one position you indeed have live PTO with a two stage clutch.

With the PTO lever in the other position you have ground drive PTO, Every time you change gears in the tractor the PTO speed changes with it. When you depress the clutch pedal every thing stops just like a transmission drive PTO. Over the years these were used for powered trailers. At one time MF sold a rear end that was the exact ratio so that trailer speeds always matched the tractor. I know some people in my area used a truck rear end that matched very well.

I saw an old guy with one of these trailers, about 1 cord of wood on it. During spring thaw a single axle dual wheel truck loaded with cattle got stuck in mud, almost to top of rear wheels. That old guy hooked on with his little MF and trailer, pulled the truck out with ease first try. I was heading home to get my Farmall 560, when this guy happened along. I was not confident 560 was the answer. The truck driver was ready to unload the cattle, but he was saved that exercise.

My MF 135 may be a little newer, but I believe they all have 2 stage clutches with live PTO.

By your description, I would guess that either someone has made a mistake it describing the action or more likely, you have a clutch pack problem.

BTW A great little workhorse tractor and the live PTO works excellent. The only time I had to rebuild my clutch was when I tried to run a 10foot MO-CO is heavy laid down hay. My fault not the tractor's

Thanks to everyone. I am driving over to check the PTO myself.

Just to agree with the other - there is something wrong in your discription.

I know little about MF, but I _think_ they have the 2-stage clutch.

If it actually would work as you are describing, that would _not_ be a live pto, so something got mis-communicated.

I believe the 135's do have a two stage clutch. You better check it again.

Willard, I believe someone has mis-led you; it either has a 2-stage clutch or it DOESN'T have live pto..... ..

It is a real issue when baling. You need to be able to stop a tractor and let the baler clear sometimes. Personally, if I am buying for any type of serious work I find one with independant PTO. For fun or collecting anything goes.

I spent my entire youth operating tractor's with live and standard non-live PTO. The standard PTO was really a pain almost anywhere you used it particularly when baling. Fortunately we only used the standard PTO with the baler a couple of times. If you used an over-running clutch with the standard PTO, it was not too bad when operating a rotary mower. But we didn't do much mowing with the standard PTO either. On the other hand, every tractor I now own has independent PTO. Although it is a little more convenient, I really would not miss it if suddenly regressed and became just live PTO. I agree if you want to disengage the implement before turning it is handy, but since I slow the engine down considerably for re-engaging, I might as well stop altogether. Frankly, I tend not to turn too sharp with a baler so I don't stop it anyway. Perhaps my opinion would be different if I had less experience with live PTO and was forced to change several 2 stage clutches. Botom line I would not hesitate to purchase a tractor which had live rather than independant PTO.
