The 488 is the easy to service exposed drivetrain model. There is more weight on the header though so it doesn't react as quick to rocks and suffers more damage.

The 489 has enclosed drivetrain and all the gearing etc is on the frame with multiple driveshafts to the header. This makes it lighter and quicker reacting to bumps.

Nope, but I just sold a 489. Didn't like the tongue arrangement. A real bear to maintain the drive line and with a lot of use, the square box of the tongue bends (kinks on top)making it hard to swing it in and out (get the pin loose then reset at the new position) for road and field conditions. Otherwise ok.

The JD 1209 is a lot cleaner setup and about the same money. I know NH is supposed to be the "hay champs" but JD is a tough contender.....balers too.
