I have A 505 SuperI Vermeer just like the one Hay Dr. has pictured. Best piece of equipment we own. Baled 1000's of bales and all I've done is grease it and oil the chains, and put in twine. You don't wonder if it is going to bale, you just hang on and drive.
No personal experience with the 510 JD. I've always been told though that it is the most miserable piece of junk you'll find to try and bale hay with.

Go with the 530 or 535 these are both great open throat balers. They both make a 5 wide / up to 6 tall bale. If you have a dealer near by a Veermer open throat will be ok too. Make sure the belts, sprockets, and bearings are in good shape. I have a 535.

Thats the First Round baler we had was a 510...You would look out upon the field and see Blobs instead of bales...Then when you would pick them up with bale forks they would always break....The only thing it would bale good is damp alfalfa...Its did a good job doing that....we traded it for a New Idea 485...10 times the baler...The Neighbor ended up buying the 510 off the implement lot...He got his fill of the piece of junk too...He just parked it in the fence row a few years back and went and bought a 535...Fence line is a good place for it...

JD 510's sell for $500-1000 in the auction 7 miles from us held once a month. They always look almost brand new because they will only bale hay 25% of the time. Likely the worst machine JD ever made. You could purchase a very nice late model baler for less than $7,000. This late model Vermeer 505 Super I round baler can be purchased for less than $7,000.

The Vermeer balers all start packing when hay goes in the chamber so they are hare core/ solid core balers. I would look at F series and newer. Your price range will take from the F series to the K series. The number in front of the letter tells the size of the bale. 605K would be 6' in diameter and 5' wide. The 505 Super I pictured is 5' in diameter and 5' wide. I would look for an I baler they were made in the 504 and 505 models. If you want a bigger bale look for the J series, 604 and 605.

how about a deere 530 for 7000$ I presume it makes 5x6 bales. any thoughts on this one? right now I am paying about $3,000 in custom baling a year. I have an 85 hp tractor, so i thought about maybe getting my own baler.

My first round baler was a new 510 JD, only took me about half a season to trade that pluging up piece of junk off. when I got a very large mud turtle stuck between the feed rolls that was the last straw.
Got a Vermeer 605 F after that, it was'nt fool proof but a heck of a lot better than that miserable 510, oh those good old days.

I would not recomend it for more than about 100 bales a year. This baler is probably going on 30 years old. It is a closed throat which means the hay has to be right. You can get a much better baler in your price range. If you are in NC I might be able to help you out.

I would agree, go for an open throat design.
