Hey boys,

I got a bright idea and was wondering if any of ya'll have done it. Do you think I can use my old forage blower ( junk ) to blow shavings and saw dust into my cow barn or will that be a mess and stupid idea ? I will need it to do so for about 60'. I think it will ! What do you.

A lot of the riding farms in our area have them blown in. If it's something that you're going to do on a regular basis, I would set it up for that purpose. Most of them completely seal off the storage area with plywood, have your doors close firmly, etc. Then to avoid filling the barn with dust, have a screened opening to the outdoors where the air/dust can escape. Don't skimp on the size of this opening, the bigger, the better. This will also allow a lot of the fine dust to separate itself from the bedding.

(I've also seen snowblowers used to pile up shavings when someone doesn't have a loader or whatever to do it with, but I'd be worried about the fire hazard)

I think it will be a mess - it will be everywhere

I do have a couple of ideas - around here a lot of dairies use sand - and to spread the sand they use a couple of different things - a fertilizer type buggy with the slinger (you could keep a several day supply loaded on the wagon and it would stay dry if it was covered just like fertilizer) or a gravel truck (I am thinking silage wagon) that just has a fast side moving belt to sling the stuff a little ways....

my uncle has a gehl silage wagon with a rubber belt on the bottom - that would be great

of course if you wanted a large pile of shavings placed in a stockpile or upstairs in a barn i would think the blower would be fine - but i am picturing you want to spread it for bedding...

We had a neighbor do that and his barn burned down. It was a old dairy barn and the sawdust somehow got into the electrical wiring.

 Code? in reply to RZ(WA), 02-15-2005 12:26:26
Like our old dairy barn, when it was wired, they didn"t have any such thing as a code. That"s why you"ve got to check stuff real close. You wouldn"t believe some of the crazy things I"ve found in our outbuildings" wiring.

works for us.. in reply to John Hobby, 02-14-2005 10:37:04
I think it would work, depends on how course your shavings are... the dairy farm that I work at does it, blows it up in to his bank barn, don't know how far up it is, but it works good, Tim Shultz
