I am lookin for a hay wagon for sale near south bend IN, anybody got one for sale? in good con., don't need to be real big, pulled by tractor, not horse... lol, Tim shultz.

Put an ad in the classified section if that is all you want (look at the fine print in the upper left of many of the pages here - no ads to clutter discussion forums up.) The discussion part you got was great tho, enjoyed the thread & your question. :)

You would be best to look locally, they are generally a dime a dozen, check any of the farm auctions near you, the farm regional papers, etc. The internet is great for looking for big high-dollar items or very rare items, but something so cheap as a rock-bottom hay rack 'cheap' it will cost you too much if it is even 100 miles away. Need to look at local sources, not an international source such as this. Cheapo & common items it doesn't pay to bother with the internet.

Just my opinion. :) Good luck, you should not have much trouble finding something in the $150 range right around your corner.

It sure does depend on where your at. Where paul is they are cheap. Around here they go for loads.
Last nice rack I bid on went for $1000. I got out at $600.
Finnaly gave in and just purchased some gears and buld my own. STill got $700 in them.

Of course, a real good one will bring more - but he wants cheap. :) Price 'here' is mostly based on the gear under it. These $150 specials would not trail well at 50 mph. :) :) :) :)

The thrower racks sure hold up. One that had a warped & busted metal side, wood floor I would consider shot brought $700 last week. One with same floor, good metal sides went $900.

There were 3 new wood racks made of home-sawn lumber at one of the sales (New Prague), but we left before got to them - I did not like the big lag-boltheads sticking up in the middle down each stringer, seems an odd 'feature'.

I don't know Tim, some of those replys sound a tad pessimistic to me. The fella in Ohio has wagons for about what they go for here. The frames will be rusty but usually strong(I don't buy welded stuff). Some of the beds will be better than others. Some of the tires will be good, others will be off old cars. I use wagons like that to haul 100+ bales at a time with no problem. An item can be "good" enough for your needs but not "good" enough for others. I look for a nice large bed, wood not too far gone, frame shows some of the paint and has not been repaired, good tongue on front and a hitch on back, good tires, and I prefer a nice strong rack on the back.

SMV sign optional as I always have one with me.

since the goverment killed the tob market they are cheap here in southern ohio, i have 3 one has a 14 ft bed x 8 wide on 6 ton gear you can pull it 75 mph and it wont wip , i would take 300 for it , a 14 ft on 6 ton gear , popler bed sets low to ground 400 and a 16 ft on 8 ton gear 400

Yeah, when it comes to hay wagons, I"ve never seen good and cheap together. Lots of luck finding one.

I just got a wood 8X18 rack with a Kasten 6 ton gear and 6 bolt rims on a sale in Janesville for 245 bucks. It was the second best one there. The best one went for 580 bucks with an 8 ton Gehl gear under it. Buyer told me he was gonna roll the rack off it and put a gravity box on the gear. The rest were 5 bolt rim Kastens and Internationals - all in rode-hard-and-put-away-wet condition. They all went for 150 to 220 bucks. Anything steel rack around Madison, WI is worth 500 to 1900 bucks.

Good luck finding an affordable on.

If ya have the stuff to work with and want to do a small cheap wagon, do what my uncle did many years ago. He just went to the local junk yard and got a pick-up frame with axles and wheels. Put four 4X4s across the frame and leveled them, fastened planking to them, put a tow-bar type hitch on the frame, and away he went. It followed pretty good, but wasn"t the best to back up. Helped put a lot of square bales on that old wagon. He used it for many a year.

I did not know there was such a thing as a good but cheap wagon, unless of course you get real lucky at an auction, oryou could advertise in your local shoper.
