Out Foxed Myself On A Plow Purchase I Need Help

I finally did it. I took the plunge and bought a plow. Based on some excellent advice I received on this board over the last month I bought a Ford 101 plow. I ended up with a model 10-342. From the parts book I got a three bottom 16 shear bolt plow.

Thats the good news. Now the bad news. When I tried to mount the plow on my tractor today (Ford 860) I discovered that the cross shaft is for a Category 2 hitch. I NEVER LOOKED AT THE PIN SIZE! I need your advice on some of the potential fixes Ive come up with.

First I thought of trying to buy a Category I cross shaft. The New Holland dealer is closed for the weekend so I cant call about availability of the part. My suspicion is that, even if it is available form New Holland or a bone yard the cost will be more than I can afford right now.

The second option was to have the Category 2 pins cut off and a set of Category 1 pins welded on. I have a friend who welds for a living and is willing to do the job at a nominal cost. But Im not sure if the welded pins will be strong enough.

The third option is to see if there is some way I can grind down the Category 2 pins to a shape that will fit in my Category 1 hitch. I suspect the end result wont be pretty but with enough power tools and ignorance I think I can get an out of round shape that will fit in my hitch.

I really dont like any of my ideas. Seems like welding the Category 1 pins on would be the best action. However, since my lack of experience with farm work seems to hurt some Id really appreciate any advice or suggestions youall have to offer. The only comfort I can take from this entire episode is that I seem to have gotten a really good solidly built plow in pretty good shape ( it even came with the lever width adjusting kit), and I cant be the first rookie to buy a category 2 implement to hang on a category 1 hitch.

Thanks in advance for any advice/suggestions you might have.

Well - if, for some odd reason, the width is not a problem, cut the cat 2 pins off, blow a hole in the plow arms, and get the bolt on cat 1 pins. Convert it to 2 bottom and it will be ok. I found an old 3 bottom (pull type) and converted it into a 1 bottom for my 8N. Been working fine for a couple years now - used scrap and stuff I had laying around - only cost about $20, 'course, the plow was free. If you can't do this, then trade for a 2 bottom.

You bought way to much plow, what you bought is the size for a 5000 series Ford tractor. The 860 will never handle it. Also on a cat 2 hitch as well as the pins being wider apart and you cannot spread the arms that far apart and have them work without busting something on the tractor, the top link bast is also taller and you could not get it to raise and lower and level out properly so reducing to a 2 bottom of 16" that your tractor should pull is not an option, if you could get "ALL" the parts to convert it would cost at least twice the orignal cost of the plow. Sell it and buy something that is corect size, not over 3-12" size or 2-14" or 2-16" with a cat 1 hitch for that tractor. that plow if you could get it hooked up you could not get the front end back down to the ground. FORGET THAT PLOW.

I plowed many acres with an 860 sized Ford tractor and unless you are in very sandy soil, Leroy is unfortunately correct. Also as he said, even if you can pull it, the pins are too wide and the top link position is not correct. Prognosis is not good.

There are actually two widths for Cat 2 pins. One is the same as the cat I.

I recalled a cat III and cat III-N which also is true for the cat IV class; ie both a cat IV and cat IV-N. I have never heard of a narrow cat II, so I got the standards books out, and in standard 4-39-21, table 1, there is no mention of a standard for cat II narrow. Recommended inside width for cat I is 26.81 to 26.94 inches. Recommended inside width for cat II is 32.38 to 32.5 inches. Therefore I believe Leroy's original statement is correct; sic, the plow's bottom hitch is too wide.

Hi Dale,

The CAT II pins are on the plow for a reason; that's what it takes to pull it.

Actually, this was a very smart move. Now you have a reason to buy that bigger tractor that you've been wanting. :>)

Why don't you put an ad on Y-T "want to trade a 3 bottom Ford 101 16 for a 3-bottom 14 in 101'.

You could get a mobile axel repair vendor to turn your pins down. No cutting or welding to compromise strength. Changing the arms for the kind with changable scockets will be best but expencive. I hope you have very lite soil to pull 3 16" bottoms with 45 hp. You will also need to hang quite a bit of weight on the front of the tractor.

I acquired a pair of draft links from a 3000 with convertible cat I/cat II ball ends that fit perfectly on my 841. This may work for you and expand the possibilities for your tractor, if the hitch on your plow is not cat II width as well as cat II pin diameter. If so, my advise would be replacing the cross bar. It would take a real talented welder to make cat I pins live on that crossbar.

On some tractors you can just switch ends as the end attached to the tractor is cat II. If thats the case on your tractor you will need to make sure you don't loose the bushings from the tractor side.
Thats one thing. 2nd is I don't think your going to do a lot with 3-16's on that little tractor, but good luck. I hope I'm wrong..... .

Can you remove the third bottom and make a 2 bottom plow? Your 800 should handle that ok.

Are the cat-2 pins welded to the plow or are they bolted on. If bolted mabe you could replace the cat2 for the cat 1.
