Hi Guys, I'm looking for a sickle-bar mower to cut along creek banks. Does anyone know if there's a big difference between a 501 Ford and a 451 or 456 NH? I think the 451 and 456 are belt drives, but are they really much better? Thanks for any opinions. Festus

Just purchased a "John Deere No. 4 BIG" sickle bar mower. It's a CORKER!!!!
We cannot find a serial no., any idea where to look for one?
We're interested in finding out the year, and purchase price when it was new.
Thank you

Balanced head (pitmanless) anything is better than pitman-type anything, as long as parts are available.

Festus I have a 450 NH and it works as good as any I have seen. The belt is smooth and basically maintence free,no pitman problems. I think the NH units are worth the premium they demand. Roy

Thanks Guys, That was what I was wondering. If the belt type was worth the extra money.

No doubt they are better, but the 501, if in good condition, can cut a lot of hay as well. Mine works well. Cutting old weedy hay along a creek is no fun with either. :) All depends on what you want.
