fertilizer...What do you guys do?

My extension agent tells me to fertilize my brome field in December and February. Guess that means about now. Way to wet to fertilize and rarely frozen enough to keep from leaving serious ruts. We usually cut brome around here in late May or early June. How late can you fertilize that will help crop without just throwing away money?

I have been using 7-7-7 on my hay fields and applying 200lbs per acre on a field that gets no manure and about 125-150lbs on pasture and manured hay fields. In southern Ontario it will be sometime in April that fields will allow tractors on without rutting. Our first cutting is mid June and then we wait for the second depending on rain etc. Third cuttings are rarer and ususally happen in late September. My hayfields and pasture are a "Pasture Mix" that has clover,and several sweet grasses, some timothy. The field I get from a neighbour is mostly red clover with some other mixes in it. the best hay though is whats in the barn! ...Mike in Exeter Ontario

Micheal, if your using 7-7-7 granular your paying ALOT of money for filler, which is over half of that blend and filler is nothing but ground up rock @ $4.00 a ton.

To get maximum benefit in terms of early cut high quality hay we need to get nitrogen down by late March at the latest. HOWEVER, not everyones objective is to get high quality early cut forage. In my own case I get no premium for quality, only for color and smell. It is to my benefit to harvest later and more mature to improve the chance of avoiding rain damage. As soon as the ground freezes or dries out I'll spread on my clover orchard/grass fields that I plan to cut in early May to roll and wrap. My timothy wont see N until after the 1st of April, I want the N to be helping me hold color in June.

Doug, you didn't say where you are located but here in south central Missouri we have a simuliar problem however I have already fertilized. Even though its very wet we finally got about 5 days of cold weather and were able to get the trucks on the fields without any problems. Fertilizer will always help in the spring but for us to get the most from it we need it on the ground by mid March...Good luck
