difference between middle buster and sub soiler

Northern tool sells one that the blade can be changed from a mid buster to sub soiler what is the difference.Can you use both of them to dig potatoes.

Use the middle buster to dig up potatoes. Use the subsoiler to break the hardpan.Subsoiler is to narrow to dig your taters up.IMHO

I don't know how to dig potatoes, but, a sub soiler has a chisel point designed to break up the hard pan. A middle buster is a plow share that throws dirt both ways and is used to set up rows.

What Ray said. I've got just that. About 8" to a foot down, hard as heck. My backhoe has trouble getting through it. I've been looking for a subsoiler. I think I need a real heavy duty one not a northern tools type. Then the problem is do I have enough horsepower with my M.

Your M has enough HP for 1 shank, but you"ve got to be ballasted for traction. Check with Wengers periodically. They often get pull-type 1 shank subsoilers, and their price isn"t always too high. Sometimes a bargain can be had on a good one.

In some soils, the ground will develop a hard layer just below the plow depth. This layer can make it difficult for plant roots to penetrate, and prevent soil drainage through it. A sub soiler has a long shank designed to penetrate and break up this layer. A middle buster, as described by others has a shorter shank, and a double plow share (like a V plow on a snow plow truck) and is designed to create hills on either side of a v shaped groove in the soil. I use it for creating a furrow to plant young pine tree seedlings. This gives seedlings a little more moisture in dry time, because it gets the grass sod away from tender roots. Also works for creating trench for laying pipes, electrical cables, etc.

The hard pan usually refers to an impermeable layer of clay.
