hay mow burn what is it

I was at the hay auction the outher day when the truck beside me said his hay was a little mow burned but i thought his hay was better lookin than mine but his orchard grass brought 50 bucks a ton and mine brought 87 im not complainin but what gives thanks in advance tugboat tim

Mow-burnt hay is put up too wet and ferments in the mow. It has a sweet smell and cows like it, but its no good for a horse.

He's talking about spoiled or musty hay. Probably put in the mow too wet.

he means it probably heated up in wet spots and got a little brown or lightly moldy. might have also meant that the hay got bleached where sunlight shown between the boards in the side of the barn. just my best guess. never heard that term in my 44+ years.
