I recently bought an older used small square baler. I am getting it up into shape for this next season.
It sat out for a few years before I bought it and the knotters and associated parts have a good bit of surfacce rust on them. They function alright, just rusty.

What do you recommend I do to get the knotters and parts up in condition so I won't have to fight problems next year.

Knotter look complicated but they really are not.
Make sure the timing is right according to the manual.

JD and NH knotters have a bolt that holds them down. Just take out that bolt and flip the knotter upside down.
Grab some fine emmery cloth and shine up the bill hooks so they gleam. Get all the rust off them. Then shine up the knife with the cloth.

The only real thing you need to watch for is worn out rollers. Here is a photo of a bad roller.
This one needed to be replaced as it was catching.

Grease it up good and get yourself about a half dozen bales. Run them thru it several times. Set the bale lenght short or get some help and trip it by hand. No point in makin full sized bales doing this. That will clean off any surface rust on the moving parts that need to contact each other. Plus you can see how well (consistent) it ties.

Spraying the billhooks, etc with WD40 will help too.

Something else that might need a quick lick of emery cloth is the knotter brake disc but DO NOT oil it. It is not a good idea to get oil on the retainer discs either.
