What are you guys doing to keep busy this winter?
Here is the 1st of the 3 hay racks I need to get done.
Pretty pricey for the wood. About $300 to get this one done.

I would like to do the next one a bit heavier. Any one got some leads on some rough cut lumber in minnesota????

Found some wood. in reply to Kelly C, 02-03-2005 19:26:56
Your not going to believe this. There is a saw mill 1/2 mile from my house. D'oh!!!
I ordered up enough White Oak to do 2 racks from them. Price was not much more than that treated stuff from Menards but is much much better.
For each rack I ordered.
2 4x8x16 for the runners.
9 4x4x8 for the cross members
16 1x6x16 for the deck.
4 1x6x8 pine for the back.
Comes out to $330 for each rack.
Cost about $30 more for the Oak that the treated pine. Pluse its rough cut so I dont loose any wood.

I am building two hay racks this winter, an 18 and a 20 footer. Right now I am about 80% completed with the 20 footer.

I have used treated pine for my hay racks here as I don't have a economical nor convenient source for rough sawn hardwoods in my area.

I laminate 2 x 10s of various lengths to build the sills, then use 2 x 10 x 8s placed perpendicular to the sills for the bed. I finish the bed with a 2 x 6 on each edge and a back rack made of 2 x 6s. After these racks are finished we will have 3 - 20 foot, 1 - 18 foot, and 2 - 16 foot racks for our hay operation.

Call Ken at 320-398-7851, Kimball, Mn. 15 miles south of St. Cloud. Check out St. Stephen- few miloes NW of St. Cloud. Don't remember the guys number, but he's maybe a mile south. I'll check if I have it somewhere. Also, Consider an ad in the Little Falls paper (Morrison County Record). 320-632-2345. Morrison and northern Stearns counties have a number of sawmills. SE Mn would as well, but these would be closer to you.

Rough Cut Lumber in MN in reply to Kelly C, 02-03-2005 19:26:56
What part of MN are you from. I live close to the Gerhardson Brothers. They have a saw mill. These guys are super nice and turn out some good rough cut lumber. I bought a bunch of ash from them to build a fence around the horse pasture last spring. Peanuts compared to green treated 2x6. I think they cut alot of lumber for hay racks. They"ll either sell you the lumber and you build it yourself or they will build the rack on your running gear. If your interested you can email me or post here and I"ll get you their info.
Take Care Brokenwrench

I'm in southern MN (New Ulm) and looking for a good sawmill around. So is my BiL. What part of the state are they in - ash is a southern MN wood, most sawmills end up being up in pine country?

Paul, sorry for the delayed reply. I was out of town for the weekend. I"m about 20 miles north of Willmar. So a little hike for ya but not too bad. My email address should be open, so if you want to email me I"ll find their # and shoot it back to you, then you can take it from there. As I said before, it"s two brothers and they saw mostly this time of year. I believe they both get laid off in the winter. Hope this helps Brokenwrench

Paul- I would expect SE MN area would have some mills, with all the hardwoods in the area. Check with the Agri-News paper out of Rochester. www.agrinews.com, or 1-800-533-1727, ext 777.

Was it very tough to build?

4. 2x8x16 or simular posts like 6x6x16 ect.
9. 4x4x8
16. 1x6x16
4. 1x6x8

1 8 foot angle iron
2 5 foot angle iron
7 3 inch lag bolts
16 1.5x 1/4 bolts w/ nuts

A whole bunch of 2.5 inch deck screws.

Make big square. Bingo thats it.

Oops.
Also need.
2 4 foot flat steel for angle brace.
1. 2x4x8 cut to fit in between the runners.
2 bolts to bolt runners to rear of gear.
You dont bolt the front to the gear as you need it to move some. Might add some chain to keep the front from moving over the brace on the gear.

There are 2 ways to ad a photo to your post.

1st.. You need to have your own web site or a simular site that that you can up load images to. Then you can link them to you post by adding the URL into the box that say " Optional Image URL"

2nd way is to upload a image to this site. I did that for the hay rack image. I added it to the implement photos section.
After you do that. Go to the image that you just uploaded. Right click on the image and choose " Properties" There you will see the URL address for the image.
Put your mouse curser over that URL address and left click and drag accross the address. You will see it high light. Wile it is high lighted. Right click and choose "Copy"
Go to the post you want to add the image too.
Right click in the box that says " Optional Image URL" Choose "Paste"
WALA!!! You image will be added to your post.
Try it.

You can also add more than one image to a post if you want too.
You do this by adding HTML tags to you address.
It looks like this.

3TR2 3TD2 3center23img src="http://ns2.genesis-technology.com/~kvp/images/400%20SPLIT/trans/1-9-04/trans-done.jpg"2

I can type it like it realy is or all you would see is the image and not the code. To get this code to work. Change all the number 3's to < and all the 2's to >
After you add the brackets < > this tell a web browser to treat the text as a command.

I keep a copy of this HTML text in a text file and when ever I want to add muliple images I just copy from there and add it to the main boby of my post. You just add the url you want for each image in between the "
Simple huh?
