I have see two comments on another site about the price of sisal twine going through the roof this year. Since there seem to be so many hay growers on this site I was wondering if this is fact or fiction?

Weak dollar and higher transportation costs due to crude oil prices both contribute to dramtic price increases. Sisal has been selling since '99 at or below the cost of sustainable production (FAO). Higher oil prices will drive increases in the price of poly twines.

All part of the business cycle, now its the twine manufactorers turn. Bad for me and you, good for them. An interesting historical context, rampant inflation always begins in the agricultural sector. Prices rise for agricultural outputs then input prices go up. Steel leads, energy follows, then the remaining agricultural inputs. When prices fall, first outputs, then land, last inputs, energy, and steel. Our position today is strikingly similar to agriculture in the early 73-74.

Not many really understand that....

Sisal was very cheap last year, near $15 per. Generally has been $19-22 locally for the previous 5 years. So, $25 wouldn't be so bad, if one looks at the long term. Guess it's not so bad that I forgot I had some, & bought extra last fall. Should only need 2 or so more for the year.

I agree as I stated above sisal was much more expensive up here in the 90's. Checked to today and sisal 9000 is $25 Cdn. a bag from AGCO-Allis. There has been times when I've paid $35 for that stuff and that was when diesel and gas was far cheaper than these days!

We used sisal for years untill about 3 years ago. When I could by plastic 9000 for a 1/3 cheaper. I remember sisal 9000 at one time was costing us $34! Then it came down to the mid to high 20's. I'm not sure what it is now.

I found plastic 9000 knot strength was not quite as good as some of the old sisal 9000 we used. The last stuff from NH was rated at 130lb on the box but it sure seemed weaker.

So last fall I switched to Donaghys DON 190. This is good stuff with a min. knot strength of 190lbs and an average of 210lbs. Plus it comes in the big rolls so instead of 9000ft for 2 rolls you get 12000! The price was still cheaper than sisal 9000.

I ordered through JD dealer and price seems close to what I paid last year. Maybe it will spike mid season? As long as its good twine and not the junk we got last year!
