J.I. Case SP Swather?

I found a J.I. Case Self-Propelled swather sitting in a nearby shed the other day. I was wondering if anyone has some information about them, and maybe an idea of what years they were made.

Here's some characteristics of this unit:
It has a V4 Wisconsin engine on it, mounted to the right and slightly back from the operator platform (which is open, by the way); no hood or related tinwork, the engine is just out in the open. It has levers for steering, and a single rear wheel. Sorry I can't snap a picture to post up here.

Any info would be welcome.

I've been running one for 32 years. Some of my fields are hilly. I wouldn't mow with anything else. The biggest pain is replacing the belts. There are 7 of them and all but one involve removing shafts. Mine is a 1967 Hesston. The one I wore out is a little older and I have another parts machine besides. The book I have for the first one is Case, just an owners manual. I got a good parts book with the second one. One thing it didn't tell me there is a cap screw bolt in the bottom end of the pitman shaft that has to be removed to change the pitman belt. G-r-r-r

They were made by the Hesston Co. of Hesston Kan. Built in the late 50's and thru the 60's, the S.P.'s were very good machines, we had touble with the pull types.

These were built by the Hesston Corp. of Hesston Kan. they were built in the late 50"s and 60"s. they were a good machine

I have a 650 that matches your description. It has a 8 foot head and conditioner. I have not used it, but the engine runs. Some one has removed the brakes. I would be intrested in some parts if yours is not useable.

They were made by Hesston, as I recall. We bought a Case 14ft. that had the Wisconsin engine removed and a Case watercooled 4-cylinder combine engine put on it. Gave the swather some respectable power. Brother still uses it to open fields. Steering was simple; on flat ground you could steer with your leg moving one lever to the side one way or the other. It was a good machine. Don't remember the years though.

Yessir that one lever for trim steering was easy to hold yer leg against and keep her running straight. I ran dads the fall after I got out of the service swathing alfalfa seed and man was it a cold place up on top of the open platform. Of course it wasn't much better on the old Gleaner A when we combined it either.

In the mid 1960 sI bought a new Case Hesston self propelled windrow machine.It seems to me that it was 12 or 14 foot wide because I could not get thru any of the narrow bridges.So carried it on my tilt bed truck sideways.When first delivered the locals would like to laugh me out of the barn.My partner and I did a few custom jobs,after which we could not keep up with the demand to swath hay everyware.I guess we had the machine for about five years. I cannot recall any serious breakdowns.I only remember changing belts occasionally.If it is in fair condition I can recommend it .If it was near me I would want myself.I suggest you check into availabity of drapers since it has set a long time with tension on the existing ones.
