Looking for 4 bean plates to purchase for my 494A. How well did these older planters do in planting rowed beans? Any specifs on setting up the drive chains etc for a decent crop? Would like to leave the rows on 36 inch. Any help would be appreciated. Never planted beans before, but many years of corn. Thanks

www.lincolnagproducts.com has the plastic plates that you can order online. They are quite tough and do a good job. If you use metal plates you should add some powdered graphite. You can still get them from JD, but they are expensive.

The University of Nebraska Extension service did tests and they recommend planting 150,000 seeds per acre regardless of dryland or irrigated. Go to their website ianrpubs.unl.edu, and search for the publication #G99 1395-A. The seed you buy should have on the bag how many seeds per pound for your particular seed size. Once you know that, the JD manual has charts for setting the planter for X pounds per acre.

Don't plant the seed too deep--they just need to get into moist soil. I have seldom set mine deeper than the top hole on the depth gauge.

I planted a "ton" of 36" beans with a 494A. One of Deere's best and simplest planters. Just make sure you don't plant them too deep. You should see some seed here and there
