Hay Gang, (pardon my pun) I"m going to look at a 9" John Deere 1219 mower conditioner Sunday that I might buy. It"s supposed to have new hold downs and new guards, and has been shed kept. Asking price is $2000.00. Can I get some opinions, ideas of what to check, things to watch out for, manufacture dates, and so on. I really value the advice given on this board. Thanks in advace! If it has the pin and needle bearing knife head, make sure they are tight and not worn. If they start banging during every stroke of the knife it can result in broken knives/sickles or wobble box or mounting failure. If it has the tie rod end type, replace if it is worn.

As the other posts have said, they are a good machine.

I have a 1207 that I use that is very similar to the 1217 and 1219. I have found some problems with the steel used to mount the gear boxes. I have had breaks and stress cracks there and on the tongue. I love mine and it has paid for itself many times over. Check with Sickle Works online for a bolted sickle when you are readyh for that upgrade. I run mine as fast as I can sit in the seat in heavy alfalfa with a "68 Ford 2000. If you have a chunk of rubber knocked off the rollers then get some good 2 part epoxy and I work some back in under all around the hole and it will lock down on that steel roller and not cause any more to break off.

I want to thank everyone for thier thoughts and advice, knew I could count on you folks to come through. Yesterday's result- we bought it. It is in really great condition! Hardly appears used. A few cosmetic scratches on the metal work. It has the riveted sections, but he has already added the high arch hold downs so the bolt on type can be used. When asked how much hay he has been doing, he said about 300 round bales a year. In my opinion, that's not much, seeing we do well over a thousand a year at present. He even had the owners manual with it! Never seen weather, always shed kept. I think we made a great deal. We'll know this spring. Thanks again everyone! Ron

A 1219 is a good mower have run a lot of things thru one and never broke one yet with a sharp sycle and a 1070 case you could cut at about 10mph . only thing I did not like was hyd hose for tounge swing thats in tounge can be a pain to change.

I have had a 1219 JD for several years now. When I bought it they told me a fellow had tried it but he could not make the windrows wide enough to round bale like he wanted it to. It took me about 30 minutes of running to find out what was wrong with it. Some one had taken the tail section off and had not put it back on right. In checking your new one out. Check your u joints in the drive line. Also the ones coming out of the gear boxes. These machines are gear driven and not chains that will streatch. Check your rolls for rubber missing . Your belt drive to the wobble box and also make sure the wobble box is not loose. Worn sections and guards are normall wear. Your real bats are made out of alluminum and rocks will bend them. This does not seem to cause any problem. However I have picked up a few rocks and have never had one go through the rolls. They will make a horrible racket and you can stop and get them out. Small animals and chuncks of grass or dirt will go through with a snap. I have even ran a deer fawn through and that is a horrible stinking mess. They don't require to much power. I pull mine with an 830 3cyl utility JD diesel (35 HP). In good standing material I can run 4 MPR. The only problems I have had is sections coming loose and blown Hyd Hose which are normal wear problems. You have an inside flap that you can adjust to controll you cut windrow along with adjustible tail fins.

IMHO the best MOCO (I had previously a IH 1190 by NI(the worst) and a NH 489(average). You should look carefully to reels and cutting bar. If you can turn by hand the PTO shaft, its good.

Too weak cutting bar support on 1190; JD>NH>IH; but had not timing problem as reported by Dale; I don't want to hurt anybody around but the 1219 is not in the same category of 1190; I have had the 1190 during 14 years, the NH489 1 year and a second hand 1219 since 12 years. We compared a 1219(double teeth) and IH 574 tractor to a NH 411 disck moco and another IH574, and we worked faster with the JD1219; the IH 574 doesn't have enough power to work fast with a disk moco like the 411.

I had an 1190 IH that I ran for a few years. The rolls are chain driven and the chains stretch and your rolls will get out of time. I finally broke a roll in mine and those rolls are not cheap. $1200.00 and that was about 10 years ago. The day the roll broke I was destitute and went looking and came home with a JD 1219 and it has ran every year sense. Finally sold the IH at a consignment sale for less than what the new roller cost.

Hi, If the person put on bolt on blades this is a real plus. To do this you have to put on high arch hold downs across the whole cuter bar. Check the rubber rolls for chunks of rubber pealing off. Also look for oil leaks on the two transmissions.I have a 1217 and 1219 , I think they are a great machine. Bill

I agree with the comment about checking for oil leaks. I just bought a 1219 myself a few weeks ago from a dealer and discovered a leak in the seal on the main gear box. The rubber on the seal was completely gone. I repaired it myself for less than $25 so it wasn't that big of a deal. No telling what a dealer would have charged to replace the seal.

I paid about the same price as this one but have spent a couple hundred dollars on a spare sickle, hydraulic hoses, etc. Looking forward to using it this year. I hope it's as good as others have said.

I believe these were made in the early 90's. If it is in truly good shape and shed kept, that's a darn good deal. It would bring about double that in Central MN if as you described.
