After years of hard work and watching my leased fields go under the dozer for new housing, I am finally able to buy my own fields. I have been looking at a parcel and I am told that the open fields were used for corn and that they are "carlyle muck" (or something like that). I don't grow corn, but I do grow hay. What is this muck and will it grow hay?

Caelisle Muck is a black organic soil. The stuff they grow vegetables on. It is wet in the spring. Be carefull about what is under it. If it is on top of marl you can bury a tractor in a second. Clay is better. I have farmes a little of it. I grew soybeans. I won't say you can't grow hay on it but I have never seen it done.

Check with your county govt offices- USDA, FSA, Univ Extension, etc., as well as local fertilizer plants for info on soil types in your area.

Funny thing about when we moved here in '72- the local county agent was almost an exact copy of Hank!
