We have a thoroughbred horse farm in ky, and if you want to get the bumps out, role it first, then come back and chain harrow. The reason you want to chain harrow is to break up manuar piles left by the horses so that they can decompose. If you roll it after you chain harrow, it takes the point away, and would just mash all the manuar together. You want the ground to be uncompacted after chain harrowing so that all the manuar will break up and decompose faster. We chain harrow in the fall and spring. If you have any other questions post back. But do your rolling first, and i would even give a little time between rolling and chain harrowing, just depends what you want to get out of it. The reason you want to break up the manuar is so that your horses have less of a chance of getting worms (tape, round, etc.) that come from grass.

Do you mean on grassland Ben? been there done that got the tee shirt to prove it. (Also towed harrows behind rolls and behind discs on arable land but who aint? ) BUT back to grassland. I was once told, (and thinking it over it is common sense really), it is better to chain harrow your grassland and THEN roll it. I suppose its academic on stone free land but the idea is if your harrows hoick a few stones out, then if the land is still soft enough, a heavy roll will push them back down again.

I remember as a kid pulling a set of "zig -zag" harrows behind a cambridge roll with a MF135, getting land ready for something or other. It did a good job. Thats all they had before the days of the "power harrow".

Sounds like a fine idea, but depends what you want to accomplish?

I prefer a roller as the last thing to do, but i have rocks and that is the whole point of a roller.....

There are hardly any rocks in the fields, i am using the roller simply to level out all of the bumps left in the field (they have had horses in them)

Thanks

Ben

ben:I'd pull the chain harrow first, it will also have a levelling effect. Will take off the high spots and deposit in the hollows. Then follow with roller, that will tend to hold it.
