Proper size running gear for gravity wagon?

I'm in the market for a gravity wagon but don't know much about them. How can I be sure I have a properly matched running gear-to-gravity wagon?

What's the standard rule of thumb for running gear capacity and bushel capacity of a gravity wagon?

Is there a chart somewhere?

For example:

5 ton gear=225 bu wagon, etc?

You've gotten some good advise so far. Most likely if you are buying a used wagon the box/running gear should be matched right although with a little age things seem to get weaker and the running gear that was marginal when it was new will tend to cause problems as they get older. From what I've seen with our gravity boxes anything over about 250 bushel should have 8 bolt wheels.

I don't know if it is that simple. It will depend on what you want to put in the wagon. Soybeans, wheat, and sheeled corn all weigh about 60 lb/bu. Ear corn weighs more. But 250 bu x 60 lb/bu = 15,000 lb. You also have to consider the weight of the gravity box and the weight of the running gear. I would suggest that for a 225 bu box that an 8 ton gear be used and probably a 10 ton gear for 250 to 300 bu. Be aware that not everyone rates their gears the same way. The Green ones will carry what they are rated for and so will the Electric. But if you're going to the local farm supply, you may want to subtract 1 or 2 ton from what they claim the rating is. 6 ton gears usually have 5 bolt wheels, 8 ton gears usually have 6 bolt wheels, and 10 ton gears usually have 8 bolt wheels. Considering the height of the gravity box and the tire size needed to carry the higher load, 10 ton gears work out well for the larger gravity boxes and 8 ton gears will usually work for the smaller boxes. By the way, if you like side boards on wagons, you probably should go for a larger running gear.

Soybeans & wheat are 60# per bu, so adding 1000# for the weight of the wagon & gear itself, you are looking a 7.25 tons..... Eight ton gear.

Now, figuring out what the gear is rated for can get interesting. The # of bolts in the hubs tells you something (5, 6, 8...) but I forget what.
