I have a western snowplow unit(80's) that when it gets really cold, the up and down and side to side hyd won't move. I have to put a heater around it and in a couple of hours it starts to work. Is this common? signed Not Impressed.

Thanks for all the info.I took the elect.motor off to inspect the pump and found the pick up screen was plugged up. The lift cyl.also had bad seals which let water in.I took out a hunk of frozen water the size of a large cigar.I picked up a seal kit and installed. Now it works fine

I have a Myers that came off my old '78 truck and the last couple of years I have had the same trouble. I have drained the oil and replaced it three times already this fall. Still freezes up. So I added a flat trailer plug to it and now when it isn't being used I take it off the truck and keep it in the basement to keep it thawed out. Was working on it again tonight and discovered that the oil seal around the lift ram has a small piece broken out of it so now I have to see about finding an oil seal for it. Thinking of switching to a live pump and do away with the electric unit.

I have had the same thing happen to me, water is getting into your resovoir and when it gets cold enough the water freezes into crystals and plugs the pump intake screen all you can do is warm the thing up and then change the oil to get the water out if you can find out how the water is getting in you could prevent future problems like this. I ended up putting a cover over the entire unit to keep the water out

There's a little box on the left side with a cover held on with 3 screws where the control cable goes in. Water gets in there, freezes, and won't let anything move. Take the cover off and dig/melt the ice out.

Need more info. But sounds like freeze-up.Did you clean the screen and flush the pump itself?

Or is it the cables won't move until thawed?

When it doesn't work 'froze',does the control still work freely? To clean, drain, pull the motor(2 bolts),the pump(2 more)-2 hold it in & 2 hold it together-can't tell you which, the pump sits on an o-ring.Suction screen is attached to pump, clean, set in some clean oil and turn shaft by hand.Clean the crud out of housing also.

You don't give very much info to go on? Did you ever drain the oil and replace? Might just have water in it.

I put new hoses on, New soleniod, drained reservoir tank and was told to use dextron type III tran fluid? I can hear what i think is the electric motor trying to make something happen but it only drains the batt.

The problem could be in your choice of oil-you could have moisture in it which is freezing up or oil could be thickening up. There is special oil for Hyd/electric plow units which has sort of antifreeze in ti to prevent ther iceing problem. I would check with a plow dealer or any good parts supplier in your area.I have seen this oil available at NAPA and TSC in NY.

My Monarch pump uses Dextron, but believe Western has their own oil. Best check with a Western dealer and find out fer sure. Also could be that your pressure relief valve is stuck open. Mine is set up to relieve pressure, should you strike something with the blade. works sometimes, but I have two split cylinders when it didn't!
