Looking at adding another baler to the New Hollands that we are already running. I don't want to spend the money on a new baler, or a used 500 series as they are selling used for new prices. Have been looking at some New Holland 315, 316, 320 and 321 balers. In the past I had heard that the 316 and 321 were just updated versions, and that the 315 and 320 had some problems, but I am not really sure what they were. Any input would be very appreciated.

Thanks, FarmerZ

We bought a new 316 in 84' still have it today. The main problem is the tine bar that feeds hay into the chamber, every few years one of the cast alum ends break or the rollers wear out which sends the tine bar somewhat violently thru the side of the baler. We have replaced it 4 or more times. the last time was due to the roller guides being worn. Other than that only the normal baler troubles...Overall it has been a good machine considering how much hay has been thru it....Jim

Leave the 315 and 320 alone. Stick to the 316 and 326. Not near as much trouble. Steve

What kind of problems do you commonly see with the NH 315? We're considering buying a nice used model with 70/kicker.

Don't want a lemon. Only put up 1600 grass/mix
bales/year.

Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

I use a 315 with a Farmhand 8 bale accumulator behind it and have experienced few problems. Some days I bale an entire day and never miss a tie unless I did a poor job one of my splices. I'd buy another in a minute as it fits my operation and my expectations of dependability.
I normally do a lot of PM to try and eliminate problems before they occurr but that is with any equipment, its just that balers require added attention as you know..... ....

I have a 315 that's worked well for me. Mine is a very small operation only about 1800 bales a year. Plenty for an old guy like me.

I don't know much about the 316 either but own a 315. It's been a wonderful machine ran 9000 through it last year probably more this year. Had a few problems, naturally from wear and tear but it's pretty faithful and dependable. I can relate to the inflated used prices on some balers, but seen a 575 on dealer lot sell for 7000, looked a little worn. I didn't think that was to bad but didn't really look that close at it either. The newer ones must really eat the hay, and make more uniform bales with the hydraulic tension. Good luck on your decision!

The plunger speed was slowed down on the 326 as compared to the 320. 315/316 were the same speed. Don't know about other differences; I see a fair number of 316's but can't think of a 315 I have worked on.

must have been in the habit of adding 1 to the original model. Make that 326, not 321
