i purchased a wooden bed manure spreader (late 50"s vintage). it has been well taken care of. i use it once or twice a year. i want to continue to preserve the wood and was trying to decide what to put on the wood on the inside of the bed. maybe some type of oil. i appreciate any suggestions.

I'm not a big fan of throwing used oil on every thing. If you are more of a hobby farmer and want things a little nicer than having a shed full of machinery with stinking used motor oil on them, I would spend a little more and use linseed oil. Cut it with approx. 30% turpentine and spray on with a hand sprayer. Smells a lot better and the wood will thank you for it. A gallon of each should last several years. I am assuming that you pressure wash the spreader after use. Allan, I know that you are not fan of turpentine and just use mineral spirits, however turpentine is a tree derived product, and also helps preserve the wood.

The EPA types probably cringe, but I paint used motor oil on mine as well. Do it before use, when the wood is dry.

Mike , I always pressure wash the spreader when I am done using it for a period of time. I mix new motor oil, varsol and diesel fuel in equal amounts, put it in my garden sprayer and spray a light coat on everything and a heavy coat on the floor, after the spreader has dried from washing it. My spreader looks like new. I use Thompson's water seal in the sprayer for my hay racks, once a year when I get them out, that keeps them good through the haying season if we have a rain come in. They are usually outside until fall when I stack them and put them in. Oil is good on wood, I like new oil, its only a few quarts and there is no acid content as there is in used. Used oil will work however, my Dad always used it for treating machinery...Mike in Exeter Ontario

Most folks I know, including the guy I bought my old spreader from, use used oil. It is cheap and works well. My spreader is 50s-early 60s era, still has original bed and looks like new...previous owner used to "paint" old engine oil on it with a paint brush a couple of times a year.

Hi Mike,

Always used old engine oil myself. Seems to do the trick quite nicely.

He can take it! In fact, he LOVES the abuse! LOL! (Just ask him) He's been spending WAY too much time with those "Binder-Nuts" over on RPM. Gotta break him of that habit. (Soon, he'll be hangin' out at Horsey.com)
