Ransomes-Dowdeswell Ploughs?

Can any of you gents in the UK tell me anything about these ploughs? I may be interested in bringing a few small reversibles home if I can get pointed in the right direction. Most important, are these companies still in business? Thanks for any and all info.

Gentlemen: Thanks for the replies. I can only shudder at thinking of the amount of ballast needed to handle the 7 furrow reversible on the Dowdeswell site. I am wondering about 2 furrow reversibles as I use a Ford 5200 in fairly wet conditions currently with a Ford(White) 3x18 full mount and it is a total pig to handle when it is wet. Also the land rolls quite a bit, I don't have a rectangular field on the whole place and I don't even have an end to end line of sight for strikeouts. Kvernelands is very well known here in Canada and has been probably for 40 years. Wonderful ploughs, they do a great job, but repair parts are absolutely horrendous for price. A dealer advertised a 2 furrow reversible Kvernelands (near new) for $4500 CDN (2100 pounds?) and that is way out of my league for a plough and the amount of farming I do. Besides, with barley ar $85/tonne and grain corn off the combine for $55/tonne AND the current BSE mess, I'll have to conserve the available ducats somehow. Shop, shop, shop. Tom - Just wondering where you live in Ontario? I also live in Ontario and have a Ford 5200 as well. I've found it to be an excellent tractor with over 9000hrs on her now (bought it new in 1971).

jimont: We're near Dundalk in south Grey county. We bought the 5200 used to replace a County 954 when we lost the engine out of it. We only traded because the dealer told us there were no replacement engines available. Found out about a year later, there were dozens of the engines in a warehouse in Boston where they were very popular in smaller fishing boats. Argh. The 5200 has been good though, because we found that it was capable of doing as much as the County because it was so much more easy to handle and maneuverable. Has Dual power, cab, three remotes, etc. There were quite a few around here for a while, Markdale Garage put out a lot of them.

G'Day Tom - I'm near Jarvis (South of Hamilton), close to Lake Erie in Haldimand County. Have a neighbour who runs at least 2 Counties as well -- loves them. My son has a 7700 with dual power and likes it. Those 5000's are tough tractors to beat though. We had to change out the rear wheel bolts to fine thread because we couldn't keep them tight and had to change the fan over to a 7000 fan in order to keep her cool. Found out after putting her on the dyno that we were puting out over 84hp !!! Mine is a 1971 model with a generator yet and only one set of remotes.

Hi Tom,
Dowdeswell ploughs are still going strong after one or two hiccups but I am afraid Ransomes, one of the oldest an most respected manufacturers of agricultural equipment has all but vanished. ( the name still continues on parks and garden equipment e.g. lawnmowers etc. ) The late Roger Dowdeswell needed a plough for his crawler, he could not find one he liked so he built his own ( Ironically using Ransomes bodies) and the rest they say is history.They are very well liked over here, although over here the 'daddy' of all reversibles is still Kverneland!(is that name known in Canada? ) Please click on the link for for more info.
