I am looking at a NH 163 Tedder as an addition to our hay operation. It is the older style, not a Digi-drive. Do any of you have any comments on this? I know it is made by Kuhn, but that is all I know.

Jim

I've got the green version, a JD 752 which I bought used. Although it does a nice job it isn't very durable. On mine the center gearbox housing cracked but for now my weld is holding. Keep a heavy coat of grease in the wing drives or the rollers will wear into the cast couplings. If I had to do it again I'd buy a hydraulic fold model and wouldn't buy anything else made by Kuhn. When I was looking at new the Krone tedder came highly recommended to me.

We have the Deutz-Fahr / Kuhn version of the same tedder. The crosses are very expensive and seem to dissappear frequently. Ours has an odd tire and rim size which is hard tp replace.

The axles are constantly breaking and needing rewelding. The seals get cut up very easier and leak, the balls in the rear swing linkage wear and let the crosses come uncoupled and beat the iron "ears" to bits. This also can let the rotors come out of time and bind which causes the pto shaft to snap rather dramatically.

The hydro folds are so much better, they have a different coupling mechanism too, smaller standard sized axles and tires etc.
