Me and a friend of mine were out on a stroll out in a part of our county that is now all in crp and not very travelled. We stumbled onto an old homestead that had several old cotton strippers and 6 Cockshutt Combines. Was curious about them. This hasn't been real grain country in a long time. Mainly cotton. What is a cockshutt combine and are they worth anything?

When I was in school, we had a tour through the factory when they were assembling the 545 and the 5542 combines and hearing them fire up the 383 Chryslers for the first time with no mufflers in a confined space would lift the hair on your head. Great combines back then.

Cockshutt combines were built in Brantford, Ontario and after White bought Cockshutt and Oliver AND MM, Cockshutt still built the combines for all of them. At one point in time here in Canada, they were second only to Massey for self-propelled combines. They did really good work and were nice to operate. Usually Chrysler powered. Sad to say, it's like anything else. They are worth nothing unless a buyer offers you a price. Good Luck.

Tom - I was past the old Cockshutt factories to-day. Really a sad sight. I can only imagine what it must have looked like when they were going full steam --- it's a big site with only a very few buildings left now. We bought some great 16' fir 2"X 12"s when they were tearing the place down. All that lumber was totally knot free and full 2"x12" that we cut down to 2"x4", 2"x6" etc. when we remodelled my father's house. By the way, I helped a neighbour remove construction materials from the "New" Massey Ferguson Combine plant in Brantford before it opened in 1963. Sad again , as it too has been shut down and was less than 20 yrs old at the time.
