I am pretty hard on my Rear blade and have broke it several times at the 3/point attachment points. Never bent the blade it is very strong. In the future I will be getting a new one and was wondering what is a real good stronge one? It needs to be at least 7 ft wide, tilt and rotate around. Thanks, Mark H.

Willy-N,
I have a Service Rhino blade I use on my 3000 Ford. It is a heavy blade. Made for 100 hp tractor. It does not use pins that go thru the 3pt arms. It has a lower cross arm that has tabs with holes in them. A pin goes thru one tab then the 3pt arm then the other tab. You could do something similar to your blade.

I found one and see what your talking about. That looks like a strong way of hooking them on. Two Tabs one on each side ot the Lower Link Bar and a pin thru them. That would take the bending motion out of the pins. Did notice you have to get above a 100 hp+ Blade to get a blade as strong as mine is built! There Cat I style looks like it would bend easy not much bracing on the blade. I know my blade weights around 450-500 lbs and the Rhino small ones are around 300-350 lbs of steel. Mark H.

From the pictures I see of you blade It does appear to be quite well built except for the 3pt hookup. I would rework it along the lines of the Rhino and I think that should do it.

Ypu know when they build equipment for Arctic use they use special steels this is for work at -40 I foyur like I am I have had alot of -10 weather so the cold could have some effect on the brittleness of your steel too.

I was thinking of that myself. These problems seem to happen when it is real cold out! I busted the big bolt that holds the whole blade on in the tilt tube. It was a 3/4 inch bolt and I up graded it to 7/8" yesterday. Mark H.

buy a heavy blade like rinho or bushhog then you will be breaking 3pt lift arms instead of blades. Take allan advise buy a real heavy duty piece of equipment.

The Massey 135 Orchard uses a 165 Rear end so the Lower Link arms are real strong. They are over 3/4" thick and the arms supporting them are BIG! Picture does not do the justis but I don't think they would break very easy. The point the upper link hooks into is also over sized also. The top link that broke was Cat II but it broke on the end not on the tractor cause the blade swung around and worked like a lever on it. Mark H.

I was just compairing them to the Cat I 8N Lower Link Bars and they are at least twice a large. I know all things will break but for the size of the tractor they are pretty big. Mark H.

Hey Mark,

Have you given any serious consideration to a CAT II hitch? That'll put the whoa to that cow pie problem of yours. :>)

What are the differences between a #1 and #2 Hitch? Which is more common? Which has more support with varieties of implements for a small acrage property?

Hi Sky,

CAT II is just a beefier outfit.

I don't ever remember seeing a CAT II pin snap. I think they are 1 1/8" diameter or something like that.

The 3pt pin specs are on the menu to the left, under research & info heading. I believe cat 1 should have the pins 26 inches apart, cat 2 is 32 inches apart.

I broke a cat 2 pin off a JD plow. Have I mentioned we have rocks? :)

I too would be concerned with the cat 1 stuff, if you get a heavy enough blade & yoke that it never breaks, the cat 1 hitch on the tractor is likely the next to go! I have a rather flimsy cat 1 blade that we've used on the Ford 960 for years, I bowed the blade slightly on cow pies.

This fall I got an IHC cat 2 blade for my bigger tractors, we will see, I have not taken the opertunity to use it yet. We have only had an inch of snow & ice here with the sub-zero temps. Surprised the water keeps working, there are 4" wide cracks in our drier than average & un-insulated soil that go a couple feet deep....

The switching point on tractors seems to be about 65-75 hp - those above are cat 2 to take more hp; those below are cat 1 which is the Ford N standard. Both are equally common, just depends on the size of your toys. :) It is possible to cross-use them, not always at the easiest or the wisest.

It seems the Cow Pies are the only thing that has realy gave it trouble or frozen in rocks. The blade has never bent yet and is very strong. I probley should use my new welder to make a new 3/point mount for it. Not sure these new pins will snap now they have 1 3/4" nuts on them and are case harden ones. Same as a Cat II Mounting hole but the pin is a little smaller that goes into the link arms. They also have a sholder which the other pin was just a bar that went across the blades support. Mark H.

Yes, that looks about like a medium cat 2 type of blade. So the cat 1 pins are most likely the weak point. I would maybe want to leave it at that with a cat 1 tractor, not get it too strong. :)

My cat 1 is a little 6', no backbone to it. It held up amazingly well for the abuse it got, clearing snow & some of the cattle yard for decades. I have on crack in my feeding platform that the frost heaves, have to go _real_ slow in that spot every time....

The big one I got I plan to use with dirt a bit more, need more oomph for that.
