I"m looking at purchasing a New Idea 5212 discbine, does anyone know if they are problematic or a good one. I don"t want to buy a piece of junk. Any info would be great. Thanks,
Kurt

I did a bunch of work on one last fall. It had really been thrashed; not the machine's fault. I kind of liked the way it was laid out. I certainly could tell where NH got the engineering for the current NH bar (1411,12,31 etc). I would not be afraid of one in good shape. I work at a NH store.

I have been working on NI equipment for 15 years. Keep grease in the cutter gearboxes, (they should be about half full), make sure you use Type O grease from a NI dealership, they call it EPO. John Deere and Case IH grease seems to be a little heavier, so I don't recommend an off brand grease. Make sure the main gear box is full of 90 weight gear oil. The one other problem I have run across would be the chains and sprocket that open the rollers when the machine is raised clear up get neglected. They should be lubed everyday to prevent the chain from breaking. Keep these things in good repair and a 5212 is an excellent mower. Just curious-is it Red or grey in color? Red ones are newer and the cutter bar is a little heavier than the older grey models.

You can get the correct grease from IH. I just bought a IH discmower thet is made by and identical to NH. From IH the same grease comes in 2 package. Either a little tube or a regular grease tube that is 3X the size, but half the price. The large tube says corn head grease. It is the grease for the new style heads, not the older ones. Alot of times the parts guys will try and give you grease for older style heads.

I don't know, I haven't gone to look yet. I have to drive a couple of hours to see it and I wanted to make sure it wasn't a waste of time first. It is a 1991. Maybe that helps.
Thanks,
Kurt

Lots of NI discbines in my area (SWPA). Everyone seems to be satisfied. RDL is right about the chains for the rolls. Helped the neighbor replace his a couple of years ago. Not any problems since. They are good machines.
