I have two neighbors that have been asking me already about doing some hay work for them...I assume i should charge per bale but i have no clue what is fair....One neighbor has about 20 acres of alfalfa for me to bale and the other has about 10 acres of grass hay...I have no clue what to charge...The guy with alfalfa said he will pay me cash or calves...Both guys told me just to bale the hay so i dont need to stack it on a rack or anything just bale it on the ground and they will worry about picking them up....Ill be using a Cockshutt 30 with a case 220 baler and im located in SE South Dakota if that helps any

here in oklahoma i cut/rake/bale 1.25 and when it hits the ground somebody else fingerprints it

I'm in NE SD. Do a lot of what you're talking about doing. I charge by the hour for mowing and raking since it take a lot longer to cut 10 acres of rocky, winding, odd shaped pieces than a nice smooth square field. Square bales dropped on the ground are .45 ea.

Mow conditioning $12.50 acre $5.00 acre raking. Baling 75cents bale. If it is on shares it is 3/4 and 1/4. These were last seasons rates,will probably go up this season due to fuel and replacement costs. I know the baling will be 95cents in 2005

When I do it for cash. I charge $1 bale cut, raked and baled. Dropped in the field. They can ride the rack if they want to for free :-)

I have charged $1.25 put in the barn.

I have done some custom cutting. I charged $10 an acre for that. I was kind of mad after doing it. Guys family was baling for him and didnt want to cut it for him. I found out why after I got into it. ROCKS all over the place. Really beat the crap out of my old NH469. Learn some that time if thier family wont do it must be some thing wrong.

First you need to clarify if you are going to "bale only" or "cut/condition, rake, and bale". Around here the complete job of cutting with conditioner, raking, baling, leaving bales laying in the field, they charge from $0.85 to $1.00 per bale with string tie. Some of them have a $500.00 minimun for the field. Some will bale on the halves, with land owner half left laying in the field.

KMSD,I custom rd.bale in N.Tex and have a few customers that want some squares so I hire my neighbor to just sq.bale.He charges .55 for baling raked hay.The bales avg.65#.I don't sq.bale enough to justify owning one of the aggrevating sq.balers of any color.HTH Tx Jim

I my area of Missouri most guys do it on shares the land owner get 1/3 the guy that bales gets 2/3

Around here it is more often 50 - 50. That is for making the hay from standing to delivered (owner's half) to his barn, but not always stacked in the barn.

Bale and drop, hay already raked. .45 to .55 depending on how much road time I have to put in (2 miles or less usually for the .45 price).

KMSD, the following are the average rates charged in Kansas in 2003 whiich is the latest year complete information is published for. I doubt that there is a large difference between there and SD where you are.
Mowing or swathing 7.85 acre
Swathing & Conditioning 9.08 acre
Raking alone 2.78 acre
Baling sm sq (wire) .57 bale
Baling sm sq (twine).62 bale
You can access these rates and make your own determination by doing a search "Kansas Agricultureal Statistics Service" There is a lot of good information there...Good luck

I live in ky and i do custom work. I usaly charge people 45 cent a bale without touching the hay. doing alfala you will deffintly get a lot a bales. if its a good alafa patch it should produce 90 100 bales an acker id say.
